The JAM exam is divided into three sections, A, B and C. Only Section A has negative marking. For every 1 mark question in IIT JAM the negative marking is -⅓ and for 2 marks questions the negative marking is -⅔. There is no negative marking for unattempted questions in IIT JAM 2026. Students can easily make an estimation on JAM scores. Candidates can check this easy formula to calculate JAM marks below:
For one mark questions (A):
IIT JAM score = {(number of correct answers*1)-(number of incorrect answers*⅓)}
For two marks questions (B):
IIT JAM score = {(number of correct answers*1)-(number of incorrect answers*⅔)}
Finally, IIT JAM final score = (A+B)
Firstly, students can take printed copies of their recorded responses after it is out. Then, print out the JAM answer key and keep them side by side. Take a blank piece of paper and evaluate your recorded responses based on the marking scheme. Finally, calculate all the positive and negative markings and you will have the final score.
In case you spot any errors in the IIT JAM 2026 answer key, you can challenge the answers during challenge window in online mode. To raise objections against JAM answer key 2026 you need to pay Rs 50 per question. The JAM answer key is released after the expert committee evaluates all the objections raised against the answer key.

For IIT JAM 2026 Biotechnology, the qualifying cutoff was 42.3 marks for General, 38.07 for OBC-NCL/EWS, and 21.15 for SC/ST/PwD. However, these are qualifying cutoffs, not guaranteed admission scores. Admission depends on rank, category, institute, programme preferences, and available seats.
