IIT JAM Analysis 2025: The most awaited IIT JAM exam 2025 has concluded. The candidates are expected to engage themselves in a comprehensive IIT JAM 2025 analysis . One of the major misconceptions of the candidates is that it is not mandatory to take part in the IIT JAM 2025 analysis. Some candidates usually overlook the IIT JAM analysis and only revisit the results. This is a major challenge and should be avoided. The candidates should understand that the IIT JAM analysis 2025 is also an important part of the IIT JAM preparation and now that the examination is over, the candidates should take part in the IIT JAM analysis.
The IIT JAM examination is conducted to admit candidates into various prestigious institutes in the country like the IITs, NITs and IISERs etc. This year, the candidates can choose a maximum of two of seven subjects available for the examination. These seven subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Economics. The overall analysis of the examination, exam trends and difficulty level will be addressed here on 2nd February 2025. Stay tuned.
The IIT JAM Mathematics examination will be conducted during the forenoon session of the IIT JAM exam schedule on February 2nd. The candidates should be thorough with the IIT JAM Mathematics syllabus and should focus on conceptual understanding rather than mugging up concepts for the IIT JAM Mathematics examination. A very effective IIT JAM Mathematics preparation including conscious preparation through the previous year’s question papers is essential for securing a good IIT JAM score.
The IIT JAM Chemistry examination 2025 was of moderate difficulty. The IIT JAM Chemistry syllabus is vast and hence demands an extensive IIT JAM Chemistry preparation. The candidates should refer to the previous year’s IIT JAM Chemistry question papers and indulge in various other mock tests to enhance their preparation.

Inorganic chemistry was easier compared to the other sections of the IIT JAM 2025 question paper.
In the 2025 IIT JAM question paper, there was one question asked on the topic of normalisation constant.
Contrary to the IIT JAM Mathematics and Chemistry examination, the IIT JAM Physics exam is conducted during the afternoon session of the IIT JAM examination from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The difficulty level of the examination was moderate to difficult. It is expected to follow the same difficulty pattern this year as well. The IIT JAM physics syllabus includes topics such as Mechanics and General Properties of Matter, Oscillations, Waves, Optics and Solid State Physics, Devices, and Electronics and so on all of which require extensive IIT JAM Physics practice. The IIT JAM Physics question paper will have questions from theory, numerical and application-oriented questions.
The candidates can refer to the following IIT JAM preparation tips to strengthen their preparation in these last days.
The candidate should start by thoroughly understanding the syllabus and identifying topics with the highest weightage. Prioritizing these topics will help in focusing on areas that are more likely to appear in the exam.
It is essential for the candidate to build a strong foundation by revising basic concepts, theories, and formulas. This ensures they can confidently solve both straightforward and complex questions.
Solving previous years' question papers can give the candidate a clear understanding of the exam pattern, types of questions, and difficulty level. It also helps recognize frequently repeated topics in the IIT JAM examination.
Practising mock tests regularly under timed conditions helps the candidate improve their speed, accuracy, and time management. Analysing performance after each test allows them to identify weak areas and improve on them.
The candidate should create a structured revision plan and allocate sufficient time to review important topics and formulas. Consistent revision ensures that key concepts remain fresh in their memory before the exam.
The candidates should engage themselves in an effective IIT JAM mock tests before the examination. It is a very important aspect of the candidate’s IIT JAM preparation and will help them asses their preparation level by helping them to understand the difficulty of the examination. The links to all the official mock tests of the IIT JAM examination designed by the conducting body, IIT Delhi, are given below. The candidates are strongly urged to practice the mock test before they attempt the actual examination.

The IIT JAM 2024 exam followed a well-structured format, consisting of three sections as per the examination pattern: Section A, which featured Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs); Section B, which included Multiple Select Questions (MSQs); and Section C, which tested candidates with Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Each section had its own unique challenges, testing the candidate’s conceptual knowledge, analytical thinking, and numerical accuracy. Here's a detailed analysis of the exam across different subjects:
The Physics paper covered important topics such as Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Mathematical Physics. Among these, Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Physics received the most attention, making them the primary focus areas. Overall, the difficulty level of the Physics section was moderate. However, Section B stood out as particularly tough due to the presence of multi-concept questions that required candidates to use knowledge from different areas. While Section A was more simpler, the candidates needed to pay close attention to detail in Section C, which focussed on numerical accuracy.
The Chemistry paper had a broad range of topics, including Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Analytical Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Organic Chemistry focuses heavily on reaction mechanisms and spectroscopy, while Inorganic Chemistry focussed on coordination compounds. Physical Chemistry tested core areas such as thermodynamics and quantum chemistry. The overall difficulty level was again moderate, with Section A being the most easy. However, Section B required a deeper conceptual understanding to tackle the questions effectively, and Section C tested numerical accuracy, making accurate calculations crucial for scoring well.
The Mathematics paper tested candidates on topics like Calculus, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Group Theory, and Differential Equations. The primary focus areas were Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Group Theory, which appeared frequently in the questions. The overall difficulty of the Mathematics section was moderate, but Section B was more challenging with its difficult multi-topic questions. Meanwhile, Section C required accuracy in calculations, making it essential for candidates to have a strong grip on numerical problem-solving techniques.
The Geology paper was designed to test candidates' knowledge in topics such as Plate Tectonics, Petrology, Paleontology, Structural Geology, and Sedimentology. Petrology, Paleontology, and Structural Geology were the key focus areas, with questions on these topics being more frequent. The paper had a moderate difficulty level, but Section B was observed as the hardest part as per the reviews of the experts. It required candidates to have a strong conceptual foundation and the ability to think critically to solve the questions effectively.

The IIT JAM exam is conducted for admission to postgraduate programs such as MSc, MSc-PhD dual degree, and other integrated courses in science at IITs, NITs, and IISc and the other top institutions of the country. It assesses candidates' knowledge in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and others, helping them secure seats in prestigious institutes for advanced studies and research.
No, IIT JAM is not tougher than JEE. While JEE focuses on undergraduate admissions and covers a broader syllabus with higher difficulty, IIT JAM is for postgraduate admissions and tests subject-specific knowledge in-depth.
Yes, there is a negative marking in IIT JAM, but it applies only to Section A. For each incorrect 1-mark question, 1/3 mark is deducted, and for each incorrect 2-mark question, 2/3 mark is deducted. Sections B and C, however, do not have any negative markings.
Mathematics is often considered the hardest subject in IIT JAM due to its abstract concepts, rigorous problem-solving, and high analytical demands. It requires a strong foundation, consistent practice, and a deep understanding of topics like real analysis, linear algebra, and calculus to perform well.
