IIT JAM Physics Question Paper 2025 – Analysis

IIT JAM Physics 2025 paper consisted of theoretical and numerical questions about fundamental concepts in equal proportion. The overall difficulty level was from Moderate to Difficult, with a little higher than the last year.

In the IIT JAM Physics Question Paper 2025, there were more questions on Boolean Algebra, which were of a conceptual nature. Logic Gates did make it to the examination, but the number of questions from that section was comparatively less.

● The most challenging were the MSQ and NAT sections, which required considerable deep conceptual clarity.

● Thermodynamics, Mathematical Physics, and Mechanics were the most scoring sections.

● Electrostatics, Electrodynamics, and Optics were said to have tougher problems.

In short, the IIT JAM Physics 2025 Exam preserved a good mix between theoretical and numerical. Those who have a good grip on the fundamentals and who could solve problems quickly would have found the paper to be lenient. However, the conceptual depths of these IIT JAM question papers could have been somewhat difficult for those who relied on practising with formulas.

IIT JAM Physics Questions with Solutions (Asked in JAM 2025)

Ques 1. Consider a volume $V$ enclosed by a closed surface $S$ having unit surface normal $\hat{n}$. For $\vec{r} = x\hat{i} + y\hat{j} + z\hat{k}$, the value of the surface integral $ \dfrac{1}{9} \iint_S \vec{r} \cdot \hat{n} , dS $ is

(a) $V$
(b) $3V$
(c) $V3$
(d) $V9$

Ans. (c)

Solution:

$\vec{r} = x\hat{i} + y\hat{j} + z\hat{k}$

From Gauss divergence theorem,

$\iint_S \vec{r} \cdot \hat{n} , dS = \iiint_V (\nabla \cdot \vec{r}) , d\tau$

$\nabla \cdot \vec{r} = \left( \dfrac{\partial}{\partial x}\hat{i} + \dfrac{\partial}{\partial y}\hat{j} + \dfrac{\partial}{\partial z}\hat{k} \right) \cdot (x\hat{i} + y\hat{j} + z\hat{k})$

$\nabla \cdot \vec{r} = (1 + 1 + 1) = 3$

So, $\iiint_V (\nabla \cdot \vec{r}) , d\tau = 3 \iiint_V d\tau = 3V$

$\dfrac{1}{9} \iint_S \vec{r} \cdot \hat{n} , dS = \dfrac{1}{9} \iiint_V (\nabla \cdot \vec{r}) , d\tau = \dfrac{1}{9} (3V)$

Hence, $\dfrac{1}{9} \iint_S \vec{r} \cdot \hat{n} , dS = V3$

Ques 2. Two point-particles having masses $m_1$ and $m_2$ approach each other in perpendicular directions with speeds $v_1$ and $v_2$, respectively, as shown in the figure below. After an elastic collision, they move away from each other in perpendicular directions with speed $v_1'$ and $v_2'$, respectively.

The ratio $\dfrac{v_2'}{v_1'}$ is

(a) $\dfrac{m_1^2 v_1}{m_2^2 v_2}$
(b) $\dfrac{m_1 v_1}{m_2 v_2}$
(c) $\dfrac{m_1^2 v_2}{m_2^2 v_1}$
(d) $\dfrac{m_1 v_2}{m_2 v_1}$

Ans. (a)

Solution:

From conservation of momentum in x-direction:

$m_1 v_1 + 0 = m_2 v_2' + 0$
$\Rightarrow v_2' = \dfrac{m_1 v_1}{m_2}$

In y-direction:

$0 + m_2 v_2 = m_1 v_1' + 0$
$\Rightarrow v_1' = \dfrac{m_2 v_2}{m_1}$

Now, $\dfrac{v_2'}{v_1'} = \dfrac{\dfrac{m_1 v_1}{m_2}}{\dfrac{m_2 v_2}{m_1}} = \dfrac{m_1^2 v_1}{m_2^2 v_2}$

Ques 3. Which one of the following figures represents the vector field $\vec{A} = y\hat{i}$?

($\hat{i}$ is the unit vector along the x-direction)

Ans. (a)

Solution:

$\vec{A} = y\hat{i}$

Field is in $+x$ direction when $y > 0$.
Field is in $-x$ direction when $y < 0$.

Option (a) is correct.

As the value of $y$ increases, the strength increases, i.e., the magnitude (length) of the vector increases.

Congratulations on clearing IIT JAM 2025! That’s a great achievement.

  • Now you can apply for M.Sc. or other post-graduate programs at IITs, IISc, and other top institutes through the official counselling process.
  • Make sure to check the JoSAA JAM Counselling Process (https://jam.iitkgp.ac.in/counselling) .

Hello,

Yes, you can appear in IIT JAM with 65% in 12th because you don't need 12th marks in IIT JAM. In IIT JAM they need your bachelor's degree, and you must have a minimum aggregate mark of 55% in this degree; then you can appear in IIT JAM. This means overall IIT JAM doesn't need 12th marks; instead, it needs bachelor's degree marks.

I hope it resolves your query!!

Yes, the IIT JAM Mathematics syllabus is mostly the same as what is taught in B.Sc. Mathematics. Core topics like Calculus, Algebra, Differential Equations, and Real Analysis overlap. However, JAM tests deeper understanding and problem-solving skills, often at a higher difficulty level than typical B.Sc. exams. Some topics may also be covered more rigorously or appear in more applied forms. So while the syllabus is similar, focused preparation is needed to match JAM’s level.

Hello

With an IIT JAM rank of 2167 in the General category, top-tier Indian Institutes of Technology such as IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Banaras Hindu University are unlikely options, as their closing ranks are typically in the low hundreds to a few thousands. However, you are still in a good position for several reputable government colleges through both the IIT JAM counselling and the Centralised Counselling for Master of Science and Technology (CCMN) channels.

If you belong to the Scheduled Caste category, you have a strong chance at getting admission to IIT Banaras Hindu University in the Master of Science in Physics program.

If you are in the General category, apply through the Centralised Counselling for Master of Science and Technology to National Institutes of Technology such as NIT Silchar, NIT Srinagar, and others.

You should register for the Centralised Counselling for Master of Science and Technology for admission to National Institutes of Technology and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, and carefully prioritize your preferences in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

You may also explore the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research option:

If you are interested, register for the IISER Aptitude Test and aim for a rank below approximately 2000.

Keep alternative plans in mind:

Consider reputable National Institutes of Technology in your state or nearby, such as the National Institute of Technology Agartala, National Institute of Technology Nagpur, and similar institutions
