Science is a field pursued by many students who want to contribute to the betterment of society. Always considered a subject for the intelligent students, science is a subject for passionate students more so. From the origins of living beings, to the flora and fauna of the earth, to the future and what all it will entail, all comes under the broad umbrella of science.
For many, the misconception is that science is merely made of three fields namely, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. But it is much more than that. Physics, Chemistry, Biology can be considered as the broad division under which there are many varied fields.
A lot of colleges in Bhubaneswar now have graduate programmes in streams like Biotechnology, Information Technology, Geology, Mathematics and many others. The traditional options of Physics, Chemistry and Biology are always there. These new and upcoming fields give students a better career planning opportunity. They can be considered as professional courses.
Also, students can plan to do their postgraduate degree and PhD in these fields for better career prospects and growth opportunities. All this course may not be available at all colleges therefore, it is advisable to check the colleges which have the courses of your choice after 10 +2.
The admission to these colleges is mostly on merit basis depending on the students 12 standard results. However, some colleges or universities may have an entrance exam along with the merit. It is advisable for the student to check with their preferred institutes.
Undergraduate level
The science stream is opening up with many specializations. The student’s choices are not just limited to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students can opt for courses under these traditional streams of science for doing a course which has a more professional approach and could turn it into a career for them. Some of the new specializations are -
B.Sc. with Life Science
This is the field of biology with components of living organisms like cells or DNA or the study of entire populations.
B.Sc. with Botany
This is a specialization in the study of Plants. This field involves study of plants and their importance in the overall ecology of the earth.
B.sc with Genetics
This is a very new and exciting subject which studies our genes and which define our uniqueness and answers our question to why we are made this way.
B.Sc. with Microbiology
This is a field of Biology which studies microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses, all those living organisms that are not visible to the naked eye.
B.Sc. with Zoology
The study of the animal kingdom is done in this specialization.
B.Sc. in Agriculture
This is an exciting field of science where the students will learn about plants, crops, plant genetics, soil science and allied science for farming.
B.Sc. in Biochemistry
This field as the name suggests combines biology and chemistry to study the integrated approach in living organisms.
B.Sc. in Computer Science
With this field, the student will study subjects related to computers and information technology. This field is highly sought after as it is the closest to being an engineer.
B.Sc. in Dietetics
Food technology and diet and nutrition has attracted a far number of interests in these times because everyone wants to eat healthy and have a healthy lifestyle. This is the field to be if the student wants a career in diets and nutrition.
B.Sc. in Forensic Science
This field has caught the fancy of many students as it is the scientific study of solving a violent crime. Due to its nature of serving for the good of the society has also attracted my students to it.
B.Sc. in Medical Technology
With the use of technology in the medical field going up every year, this field can get the student in the forefront of something new and exciting. It combines two things, medical procedure, and technology for the betterment of the patients.
B.Sc. Nursing
The nursing profession has changed and how. This field helps you learn subjects similar to an MBBS degree and serve the patients in better ways.
B.Sc. Statistics
Information and data are the new gold in the world of digitization. This degree will help students excel in it.
B.Sc. PCM
PCM stands for physics, chemistry, and Math. This degree gives you the exposure of all three subjects and lets you choose the career you want in any of these three fields.
B.Sc. in Information Technology
Information is gold. With this field, the student will learn computer language, programming, e-commerce, networking, hardware, and all allied fields.
Apart from this, there are many more specializations that can be chosen by the students after their twelfth standard results. The student need not worry about PCM or PCB marks to get into engineering or medicines but can look at these new avenues to build a career of their dreams.
M.Sc. (master’s in science)
The students can always aim for a master’s degree after their graduation as this will improve their prospects in the job market and give them an in-depth knowledge about their chosen field. Most colleges would offer a postgraduate degree in these specializations. The students need to check for universities or colleges that offer the postgraduate program and start planning for pursuing the same while they are doing the graduation. The admission process to the course could be merit or entrance exam based or both.
PhD – Doctorate degree
This could be the ultimate goal of the student who would like to get into research and development of their chosen specialization. The degree can be pursued after gaining some experience in the field. Or pursued simultaneously with their work. The entrance to the course would be merit or entrance based.
Students are advised not to pursue an undergraduate diploma or certificate course until and unless the student will continue to pursue a graduate degree after the completion of the Diploma. Only a diploma course will not be advisable for the future prospect of the student.
Sciences Degree Colleges in Bhubaneswar: Eligibility Criteria
Undergraduate Level
The students aspiring to take admission into undergraduate science course in any college in Bhubaneswar will need to fulfil the following criteria:
The student must have completed 10+2 from a recognised board or university with minimum 45% aggregate
The student is advised to check for any entrance exam to be conducted by a particular college or university.
The student may also be asked for his / her PCM score or PCB score depending on the specialization he / she chooses.
Postgraduate Level
For admission into the postgraduate course, the student would need to graduate from a recognised university or college with a minimum 50% marks
The admission could be based on merit or entrance or both.
A student can also pursue a post graduate diploma or certificate course from a recognised college or university after graduation.
The student will have to fill an online application form for the college or university details and the specialization he/she wishes to pursue.
The student will be asked to mention the 10+2 results and personal details like address, photograph, signature, and other proofs.
The college or university would come out with a merit list or cut off score depending on which the student will come to know if he/she has got admitted or not.
In case of an entrance exam, the exam score and merit list based on it will give the indication for the admission of the student.
The student is advised to apply to multiple colleges and more than one specialization to improve his/ her chance to get an admission for the undergraduate level.
It is a good idea to check with the colleges beforehand for the admission process too.

The student can look for entry level jobs or internships in the companies relating to their specialization.
The salary for an entry position could be around Rs. 1.25 lakhs to 2.25 lakhs per annum.
It is advisable for the students to aim for a postgraduate degree once they finish their graduation to have better job opportunities and a well-defined career path.
A lot of time, working for some time to gain some first-hand experience and then start the post graduation could be a good idea.
The student could also take up teaching at coaching classes or home tuitions or such jobs to keep gaining some experience and then decide upon his/her post graduation degree.

Taking up an entry level job in any organization could add the work experience but not the specialization experience he/she pursued.

It is advisable that students have a plan to study further to have a well-defined career path.
How many years is the B.Sc. program for?
The undergraduate B.Sc. The programme is more than three years. In some cases, like nursing or computer and information technology related courses, it could be for four years.

There could be a need based or merit-based scholarship program available, which can be enquired at the University or college board.
Can I work during my undergraduate degree program?
Yes, most undergraduate degree programs give time for part time jobs.
Do I have to give an entrance exam for admission in a science program?
In most cases, there is no entrance exam for B.Sc. course. It would be advisable to check with the particular university or college if any.
Can I change my specialization after the first year?
It is not advisable to do so, as you may be required to repeat the 1st year in the new specialization.

It would be advisable to enquire at the university or college about the same where you wish to take admission for M.Sc.
What are the options available after doing B.Sc. in Botany or Zoology?
The best option would be to take a teaching job or apply for a research assistant position in a R&D company to gain experience.
Will pursuing a post graduate diploma course of one year help instead of an M.sc?
