The JNU cut off for Sociology turned out to be a huge shock for students this year. The cut off surprisingly went as high as 100.33 marks, which is the highest marks recorded ever by the university. Even though Sociology is considered as one of the most sought after subject in the university, but nobody expected it to be this high. The JNU Sociology cut off never exceeded over 269 marks in the past. Since the announcement of CUET PG cut off marks 2026, students are wondering that how can a cut off go over 100 marks. To understand this, one must firstly know the JNU admission process and how university prepares its cut off list. The university prepares the JNU PG cut off based on the marks obtained in CUET PG along with deprivation points.

The deprivation points system of JNU measures the regional, gender, and socioeconomic parity to calculate the JNU PG cut off. Every year, thousands of candidates compete for limited seats across postgraduate programmes. While most aspirants focus on their CUET PG scores, many are unaware that deprivation points can significantly influence the final JNU cut off. Candidates eligible for deprivation points receive additional marks during the preparation of the merit list, which can improve their ranking and increase their chances of securing admission.
The Student community seems to be divided over the use of deprivation points in JNU admission process. While some says it is upliftment of students from socially backward communities. While others believe it is unfair and against meritrocacy.
A reddit user said that he scored 270 marks out of 300 in CUET PG without any deprivation points. He expresses disbelief over how deprivation points affected his chance of admission despite scoring 270 marks.

Another reddit user also said that he scored 259 out of 300 marks in CUET PG. After seeing the JNU CUET PG first cut off at 300 marks, he has lost his hope of getting admission in JNU.
The university uses deprivation points to award additional marks for students based on their specific social and region criteria along with CUET PG scores. The goal of deprivation points is to promote diversity and ensure representation of students from underrepresented regions and backgrounds. Deprivation points does not offer separate seats like reservation criteria, instead they increase the merit of candidates during the admissions process.
For highly competitive programmes where the difference between candidates is only one or two marks, deprivation points can substantially improve admission prospects. The deprivation marks can be helpful in:
Improve overall rank.
Increase chances of securing admission in the first merit list.
Help candidates qualify for programmes with higher competition.
Reduce the effective cut off for eligible candidates.
A candidate would get separate points for each educational level i.e. 10th/ High School/ Matriculation/ 12th level/ Intermediate, B.A./B.Sc. and M.A./M.Sc. from either a Quartile 1 or Quartile 2 District as given below:

UG | 6 | - |
PG | 3 | 3 |
Programme | 10th / 12th | UG |

Similarly, the university awards deprivation points for all female/transgender candidates as given below:
SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PWD/Quartile 1/Quartile 2 | 7 deprivation points |
Other Candidates (UR not falling under either Quartile 1/Quartile 2) | 5 deprivation points |

Gender Deprivation Points - The university awards deprivation points to encourage greater participation of women, mainly in areas where the female participation is lower over the years.
Regional Deprivation Points - Students from underdeveloped districts are eligible for deprivation points according to the university’s eligible districts list based on the admission policy.
The deprivation points affects the cut of marks irrespective of the performance of the students in CUET PG. If a candidate is not eligible for deprivation points, he needs to have higher score in
