Biotechnology is a very tricky subject or course to define with technical words. It is a combination of Biology and technology. Basically, its main aim is to use biological products, for e.g.: - microorganisms in various industrial purposes. Living organisms are used to make chemicals which can be helpful in different industries such as food, medical science, agriculture etc. Biotechnology also tends to make human life and human healthcare much easier. Generally, students study biochemistry and metabolism, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, Bioprocess technology, etc.
Some skill sets which a biotechnology engineer should acquire is PCR, Tissue culture, western Blot, Mass spectrometry etc. Mainly students who like biology and at the same time helping and solving problems or issues, can do wonders in this subject. In some Universities and colleges, it is a 3-year course while in others, it is a 4-year course. Mainly this course can be found in engineering colleges, but some medical colleges also offer this course.
Biotechnology is a very famous course in India, and it has many career opportunities and job prospects. Technology is such a field which will never stop to evolve because the main aim of this field is to improve human life. Because of such a great future, the demand of this degree has increased over the years. Industries such as drug, waste management, chemical energy, Animal husbandry, Genetic engineering, etc., are on all-time high. Job positions for a biotechnical engineer can be Research associates, Bionomists, Clinical research jobs, Biotech specialists etc. Top companies such as Drager, Siemens healthcare, Johnson and Johnson, Stryker, Philips healthcare etc., provide this job position. A biotechnical engineer can earn an average salary of 5 to 7 LPA per year. The minimum salary would be 2 to 3 LPA.
Biotechnology Universities in India: Specializations Available

Below we have explained both the specializations in a brief way: -
UG Course
BSc biotechnology and BTech biotechnology both are bachelors or undergraduate specialization of the biotechnology course. BSc Biotechnology is a 3-year graduate course divided into 6 semesters and BTech biotechnology course is a 4-year graduate course and is divided into 8 semesters. For BTech Biotechnology, entrance exams generally conducted are JEE. There can also be state level and institution level-based exams, while for B.SC Biotechnology, the admissions are probably based on Merit results. But some colleges may demand their own institution-based entrance exam. Average fees for B.SC biotechnology is 15k to 70k annually whereas for B. tech biotechnology, it is 1.20 Lakhs to even 10 Lakhs.
PG Course
MTech Biotechnology and M.Sc. Biotechnology is both a 2 year and 4 semesters post graduate program. For MTech generally, there is either entrance exam conducted, or admission is given on merit basis. The most common entrance exam for MTech biotechnology is GATE. For M.SC in Biotechnology, some colleges take admission on merit basis while others consider state level or institution level entrance exams. Generally, the exams are held in the summer or monsoon season.
Other than these courses, there are also advanced level courses in biotechnology such as M. Phil and PhD. Both are research and doctorate level courses. Both the specializations are majorly of 1 year which means 2 semesters. Entrance exams such as GATE are considered for admission into these specializations.
Biotechnology Universities in India: Eligibility Criteria
