According to the NIRF 2025 ranking list, Tamil Nadu has emerged as the top-performing state in the overall category, with the maximum number of institutions securing positions. The IIT Madras from the Tamil Nadu state secured position 1 in the overall ranking. There are 17 such institutions from Tamil Nadu in the NIRF overall ranking that secured position. Last year also, 18 institutions from Tamil Nadu secured their position in the overall ranking.

We came to know from the above table that Tamil Nadu is the leading state to hold the position in the NIRF ranking. In this section you will be able to look at some of the important points on why Tamil Nadu was able to retain their position.
The students strength in the Tamil Nadu colleges seems to be the highest with respect to the others. The IIT Madras got 17 out of 20 marks in the SS (Students Strength including Doctoral Students) category which is also similar to the IIT Bombay. The IIT kharagpur scored a bit high (17.55) in this category. While the IISc Bangalore got 12.50 only and IIT Delhi got 15.24.
The institution from Tamil Nadu has a good number of faculty to manage the large number of students. IIT Madras scores 23.15 out of 25 in the Faculty students Ratio (FSR) category. Though, this score is less as compared to the IISc Bangalore but it is more than the other institutions.
IIT Madras scores full marks i.e., 20 in the Financial Resource and their utilisation category (FRU). This proves that the institutions of this state have also got financial support. They use all the financial resources properly for the benefits of the students and the faculty members.
With time, the institution has adopted the online learning system. Also several institutions use the regional language which helps the candidates to learn the better education in its own language. In this category, the top rank holder IIT Madras scored 13.75 out of 15.
There is also a proper facility provided to the physically challenged students that enables them to study without any interruption. Also, IIT madras got the full marks i.e., 20 in the Facilities for Physically Challenged Students (PCS) category.
The Metric for University Examination (GUE) is the category under the graduation Outcome parameters that shows the passing percentage of the enrolled candidates in the respective university examinations in stipulated time for the program in which they enrolled. In this category, the IIT Madras also scores full marks i.e., 60.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras is itself from Tamil Nadu state. This institution first came up in the top position under the overall ranking in the year 2019. It's been 7 years since the institution stayed at its position. This shows the consistency of the colleges in terms of education and several other aspects.
One can compare the NIRF overall ranking for the year 2025 with 2024 for the Tamil Nadu institutions. From the table below, we can see that there are various colleges that have enhanced themselves and secured better positions with respect to the last few years. Also there are few colleges that lost their position. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is the newly added university in the list which was not listed in the NIRF 2024 ranking.
There are a total 475 institutions participating in the NIRF ranking category among them 17 were able to secure a position in the top 100. Last year there were only 375 institutions from the state. This number is generally high with respect to the other states.

In the NIRF ranking framework there are about 457 colleges participating. Last year, 474 colleges from Tamil Nadu participated. This is also one of the major reasons for Tamil Nadu to keep dominating. Out of 457 colleges, 20 were able to make their positions under the top 100 NIRF 2025 college ranking. The Sustainable Development Goal is the newly added category in the NIRF ranking. In this category, the two colleges from Tamil Nadu secured the position. The first one is IIT Madras top the NIRF 2025 SDG ranking and the other is SRM institute of Science and Technology positioned 4th out of the 10 institutions.

If you didn’t have Maths in Class 12 , you generally can’t choose it as a subject in CUET . The exam usually requires you to pick subjects you studied in 12th grade for the domain-specific tests.
