An Interview with Yagneshwaran a BBA Honours Student at VIT Chennai

Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai is a private co-educational institution established in the year 2010. VIT Chennai courses include B.Tech, BBA, B.Com, BBA (Hons.), MBA, M.Tech and MCA among others. VIT admissions are done based on scores obtained in entrance exams. Students need to meet the eligibility criteria before applying for admission at Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai.

Careers360: Tell us something about yourself.

Yagneshwaran: Hi, I’m Yagneshwaran, currently pursuing my BBA (Hons) at VIT Chennai. I would describe myself as someone who’s passionate, driven, and very people-oriented. Over the years, I’ve grown from being a curious and enthusiastic student into someone who takes on leadership roles and enjoys making an impact, whether it’s through academics, events, or student activities.

I’ve had the privilege of leading major initiatives like the Freshers Induction Program and TechnoVIT, coordinating large teams, and working closely with faculty and students across departments. I was also selected for prestigious platforms like the Youth Leaders Summit at IIM Bangalore, where I gained exposure to national-level leadership and teamwork.

What really motivates me is working in diverse teams, bringing people together, and creating something meaningful - whether it’s a successful event, a project, or even just helping a peer navigate a challenge. I’m also part of the Rotaract Club core team and have been involved in the E-Cell and Debate Club, which have helped me sharpen my communication, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.

Outside of academics, I’m a big sports lover, and sports have always been a key part of how I manage stress and stay balanced. Looking back at my journey so far, I’d say resilience, adaptability, and the ability to connect with people have been some of my biggest strengths.

Careers360: What influenced your decision to choose VIT Chennai?

Yagneshwaran: Honestly, it was the exposure that VIT offers - be it through academics, projects, fests, or industry connections. Also, my relative strongly recommended VIT Chennai because of the environment and opportunities here, which made me confident about my decision.

Careers360: What was the first thing that you noticed about the campus and life at VIT Chennai?

Yagneshwaran: To be honest, it might not be the most popular opinion, but the first thing that caught my eye was the lush green campus and the huge sports grounds. I’m a big sports lover, so seeing all that space and the vibe of the campus really excited me even before the admission process.

Careers360: What were the initial challenges you encountered on campus?

Yagneshwaran: Like any fresher, I struggled a bit initially with understanding how things worked - getting familiar with the faculty, figuring out the academic system, and just knowing where to go and what to do. Even small things like crossing the grounds during rain or catching the shuttle bus on time were part of those early challenges.

Careers360: What do you think are some of the unique facilities that are offered at VIT Chennai?

Yagneshwaran: The library is really cool and well-equipped, and I genuinely appreciate the privacy we get with separate resting rooms for boys and girls. The restrooms are also kept very clean, which makes a big difference in daily campus life.

Careers360: Can you give us an overview of the daily routine followed at the VIT Chennai campus?

Yagneshwaran: We usually reach campus around 7:45 am by the college bus, and classes start at 8 am. The timetable follows a slot system, and we get a 5-minute break between periods. Those small breaks are actually nice because we get to catch up with seniors and juniors. Most classes end by 1 pm. After that, some of us work on projects, meet faculty, or plan for upcoming college events. There’s also time for sports or lab work, like practising on SPSS or Power BI. Later in the day, we often participate in club activities or other extracurriculars on campus.

Careers360: How would you rate the campus facilities? Suggest some areas that could use some improvement.

Yagneshwaran: I’d say 7/10. The infrastructure is great, but a few things can be better. There’s a lot of construction happening at once, which creates a lot of dust. During exams, we often have to sit outside on the road or in open spaces without proper seating, which is really exhausting, especially during summer. Also, during exams, invigilators sometimes ask for signatures or papers multiple times, which breaks concentration. Another issue is the pathways during rain - they can be really difficult to walk on.

Careers360: "Too much of anything is bad." What are the regular fun activities at VIT Chennai?

Yagneshwaran: Every day at VITBS feels fun because it’s such a flexible, friendly, and encouraging department. The faculty makes the learning process enjoyable. Apart from academics, there are always fun activities like sports, club expos, and various student-run events that keep things exciting.

Careers360: Are you a part of any clubs at VIT Chennai? Name some activities that you participate in. Does it hold any importance for the students?

Yagneshwaran: Yes, I’m currently part of the Rotaract Core team. Earlier, I was also part of the management team in the E-Cell and was active in the Debate Club. Being part of these clubs is very important because it teaches you leadership, teamwork, communication, and time management. It also gives you a chance to connect with people across departments and learn beyond academics.

Careers360: Stress relievers are crucial, particularly with demanding study programmes. What are yours?

Yagneshwaran: For me, playing sports is a big stress reliever - whether it’s cricket or badminton. Spending time with friends, having casual conversations, going for a walk on campus, or just chilling in the library lounge also helps. Sometimes I unwind by listening to music or attending fun events on campus.

Careers360: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much would you rate your academic infrastructure? In your opinion, how does campus life and interactions shape a student's life?

Yagneshwaran: I’d rate it 9/10, especially at VITBS. Campus life shapes you in so many ways - it builds confidence, teaches you how to manage your time, handle pressure, and interact with different kinds of people. When I look back at how I came into college as a fresher and how I’m now exiting as a final-year student, I can see how much I’ve grown in maturity, leadership, and self-awareness.

Careers360: Give us a glimpse of some regular events that are held at the VIT Chennai campus.

Yagneshwaran: We have Vibrance, TechnoVIT, seminars, Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, University Day, club expos, Sports Day, Teachers’ Day events, intra-department sports fests, Women’s Day events, and many more. There’s always something happening on campus.

Careers360: What will you miss the most about life on the campus once you leave?

Yagneshwaran: I will miss everything - the friendships, the bonds I built with juniors, seniors, and faculty. This campus shaped me into who I am today, and it gave me the space to discover what I’m truly passionate about. I’ll miss the excitement of organising events, being called by my HOD when something needed to be taken care of, and the sense of responsibility I had. That’s something I truly enjoyed and will deeply miss.
