Missed BHU Admission Despite Clearing the Cutoff marks?

Why are some BHU Spot Round cutoffs lower than candidates scores?

The BHU spot rounds are conducted only for vacant seats left after the regular counselling rounds are over. Students only apply for these vacant seats during the spot round admission. The university follows a specific merit list preparation process to allot these seats, details of which are discussed below.

How is BHU PG Spot Round merit list prepared?

Students who have applied for BHU PG admission during regular rounds, continue to occupy seats. The university does not prepare the BHU PG fresh list with only those students who have applied for spot round. Instead, the BHU PG fresh list combines regular round admitted students and spot round applicants into one common merit list. Vacant seats are allotted to the highest ranked spot round applicants.

BHU PG Spot Round Allotment Explained with Example

Let’s take a practical example, a programme has 10 seats, where six students have already been admitted with scores 77, 66, 52, 48, 42 and 37 marks, leaving 4 seats behind for spot round admission. After preparing the BHU PG combination merit list, only the top four spot round candidates received admission with marks 82, 72, 65 and 62 marks.

Why were some candidates not allotted seats despite scoring above the cutoff?

Adding to the example given above, a candidate with 55 marks gets rejected for spot admission, as all other four seats have gone to students with higher marks. This shows scoring above the displayed cutoff marks does not guarantee admission.

Why is BHU PG Published Cutoff Lower?

As per the example above, the lowest admitted students still hold the seat with 37 marks. Due to this, the spot round cutoff remains 37, despite the fact that no spot round applicants were admitted with 37 marks.

What happens if a Regular Student Withdraws?

Imagine the student with 37 marks withdraws his/ her application, the next spot round candidate with the highest marks will get the seat. The lowest admitted score becomes 42, in that case, changing the cutoff accordingly.

To summarise, the BHU PG spot round admission is conducted only for vacant seats. The university prepares a combined merit list with regular and spot round applicants. The cutoff published is the lowest cutoff recorded including both the regular and spot round admission. Students with scores which are higher than the published cutoff can still miss admission if all the remaining vacant seats are filled with students with higher ranks.
