How to create DEB ID for IGNOU Admission 2025: What is ABC ID, Digilocker?

The Indira Gandhi National Open University has mandated the creation of DEB ID for IGNOU admission. As per the latest update, DEB ID is compulsory for all students planning to pursue any ODL or online courses, including the courses offered by IGNOU. The IGNOU admission is conducted every year twice in January and July sessions. Students can register for IGNOU registration by visiting the official website at ignou.ac.in. From this year onwards all the students applying to IGNOU admission must have a valid DEB ID prior to their application being processed. What is DEB ID?

The Distance Education Bureau ID or DEB ID is a new enrollment process initiated by the UGC to keep a standardised database for students studying under ODL and online mode. All the universities in India including IGNOU have made it mandatory for applicants to have a valid IGNOU DEB ID. This helps the universities manage, store, process and access students’ academic data and credits for academic sessions and in case of a transfer to another institution.

Why DEB ID is important in IGNOU Admission?

The university has confirmed the requirement for DEB ID creation at the time of registration. Students who do not have a valid UGC DEB ID will not be allowed to register for IGNOU admission. Students can register for DEB ID from the official website at deb.ugc.ac.in. Before we discuss how to create DEB ID students must create an ABC ID first.

What is ABC ID?

The Academic Bank of Credits or ABC ID is an initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Ministry of Education (MoE) to create a generalised database for students information which streamlines the student verification process for the education institutions.

• Open Digilocker and search for ABC ID

• Enter all the required details

• Then, click on the “Get Document” option

• After loading, it will display the ABC ID

• Visit the DEB ID official website at deb.ugc.ac.in

• Enter your UGC ABC ID

• Then, click on “Enter” option

• Enter your details

• Your UGC DEB ID will be sent to your email

• Name as mentioned in Aadhar card

• Date of birth

• A valid email address

What to do after I create DEB ID?

Students can now use their id at the time of IGNOU admission. All the credit details will be stored in the DEB ID database. Students can save their DEB ID in the DIgilocker for easier access. The DEB ID is essential when a student decides to get transferred to another institution. Also, if a student dropped out in the middle of an academic programme, they can still come back years later and continue from where they left off. This opportunity is only applicable if a student comes back within 7 years of dropping out.
