In 2021-22, 3,773 candidates and about 3,831 candidates in 2020-21 were pursuing PhD programmes at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Anna University, Chennai, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Delhi Technological University and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, which are top five state universities across the country. Only, 455 scholars were successful in completing the programme in 2021-22.
The five state universities considered in the article are among the top National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 ranked engineering colleges in the country. Among the five state universities, Jadavpur University and Anna University had the highest number of candidates pursuing as well as the highest number of candidates who successfully completed the PhD programme (including Integrated PhD) over the last three years.

Overall the number of candidates pursuing the PhD programmes fluctuated in the top five state universities over the last three years since 2019-20. Delhi Technological University, Anna University and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur showed an overall increase in the same time period.
Around 23 per cent of the admissions were decreased in Jadavpur University, Kolkata and ICT Mumbai in the last three years.

Most universities had a very fluctuating number of graduates over the last three years. Among all the top five state universities, only ICT Mumbai and Delhi Technological University had an overall decrease in the number of candidates who successfully completed the programme over the last three years. Rest of the universities had increased the number of PhD scholars.
