Careers360: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Answer: I am Jyotsana Paatni, and I have been working with India TV for six years as an anchor and correspondent. I have 11 years of experience in the media industry.

Careers360: What were the factors that made you choose your institution/university?

Answer: The first and foremost reason to choose Chitkara University was because of its ratings and rankings and its proximity to Chandigarh. Also, I had heard great things about the university from my seniors and other students studying at Chitkara University.

Careers360: Why did you choose to pursue your specialization?

Answer: While studying and understanding the basics of journalism, I became interested in print and television. I was also fascinated by the idea of reporting in the field, and I was keen to pursue a future in that field.

Careers360: Please describe your journey till date.

Answer: My journey has been a roller coaster ride with lots of understanding, learning, and unlearning. But one important thing that I have learned during my eleven-year professional career is that every day is a new day. Start fresh and give your best. Nothing is in your control except your share of hard work.

Careers360: What are the key learning points from your college days that have held you in good stead so far?

Answer: I was fortunate enough to study at Chitkara University under the guidance of esteemed faculty members. They always focused on the understanding of the basics and the clarity of concepts. Another thing that I learned from my faculty was punctuality, determination, and professionalism.

Careers360: Share a few good memories from your college days.

Answer: Chitkara University holds a special place in my heart. I have spent the best time here, with many memories, but I am sharing a few. Visiting the Badi campus was fun, and going for outdoor projects and the media fest was a great experience. Coming up with our newspaper was a different experience and the best way to produce and present our news bulletin.

Careers360: What were the extra curricular activities you participated in during your college days? How did they help in shaping your future and career path?

Answer: I have been an athlete since childhood, and while pursuing my bachelor's degree in mass communication from the university, I got the opportunity to participate in an inter-university sports meet where I bagged three gold medals in different games. My victory was not only appreciated but also celebrated by my faculty. This exposure gave me confidence and reminded me of how important it is for every individual to be healthy and mentally fit. Also, these sporting skills helped me understand and present the sports news better when I started working. I am still pursuing my hobby of staying fit and healthy, and it has helped me to get many sports shows, including the most popular yoga show in the history of Indian television (news), named "Corona Se Jung Swami Ramdev Ke Sung".

Careers360: How would you describe the support that you got from the faculty and team / classmates? How did it help?

Answer: With the help and support of the faculty, I was able to perform well along with my batchmates. Most of them were supportive and open to the ideas of the students. They always focused on practical knowledge of the subject and made us work like professionals early in college. We did produce many news bulletins and designed newspapers just like any professional media house. Every bit of research, content generation, production, designing, editing, and reporting was done by us (the then-students) with the help of the faculty.

Careers360: What was your placement season like? Any memories you would like to share with our readers?

Answer: The last semester of my course was industrial training, where the university helped us with placement in different media organisations. I was the last one from my batch to get placed, but believe me, my patience and positivity helped me stay sane while everyone was getting placed. I was placed with NDTV for industrial training and got a job with the Day and Night News Channel during my training period.

Careers360: Do you believe that constant reinvention is a must and one needs to keep abreast of the updated trends in the field? How best would you describe the process?

Answer: Change is the only constant, and with the times, we should update ourselves with technology, events, and mediums. For instance, when I started anchoring, the equipment we used was old-fashioned, but with time and the advancement of technology, the presentation and portrayal of news have changed for the better. We now shoot with HD cameras for HD screens with hi-tech cams, and the new age of media is creating new sensations in the news industry. The digitalization of news has led to an increase in the graph of new-age media.

Careers360: Your advice to future aspirants?

Answer: Remember, it is your passion, consistency, and hard work that will help you achieve your goals and fulfill your dreams. Don’t lose hope or give up midway; the journey will always be a roller coaster ride. Many times, things won’t happen as planned, but stay true to your passion and look back for motivation in tough times. Remember where you started and how far you've come.
