Who Is Vihaan Malhotra? India's U-19 World Cup Vice-Captain and Chitkara University Student

Vihaan Malhotra is a first-year BBA student at Chitkara University and the vice-captain of the Indian team that won the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2026. Throughout the tournament, he played the role of anchor — steadying shaky starts, maintaining team morale through rain delays and high-pressure chases, and delivering a particularly composed performance in the semifinal. His leadership on the field reflected qualities that extended well beyond cricket: composure under pressure, consistency, and the ability to hold a team together when it matters most.

Even before the World Cup victory, Malhotra had been acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the defending champions of the 2025 IPL, for the upcoming IPL season, marking his entry into the world's most-watched T20 league. It is a pathway that echoes the early careers of several Indian greats, including Virat Kohli, who was also part of an India U-19 World Cup-winning squad before going on to captain the senior side.

How Did Chitkara University Celebrate Vihaan Malhotra's World Cup Win?

Dr Madhu Chitkara, Pro Chancellor of Chitkara University, led the felicitation ceremony and presented Vihaan with a cheque of Rs. 2 lakh as recognition of his achievement. Addressing the gathering, she said:

“Vihan’s achievement is not just a sporting victory; it is a testament to character, discipline, and perseverance. He represents the spirit of young India, fearless, focused, and future-ready. Vihaan has made the nation proud and elevated the university’s name on the global stage. We are immensely proud of him” Students and faculty joined the celebration in full, making the welcome ceremony a campus-wide event rather than a formal function.

Balancing Cricket and a BBA Degree: Vihaan Malhotra's Journey

The path that led Vihaan to a World Cup winner's medal ran through early-morning net sessions on campus fields, syllabus notes crammed on flights, and the particular pressure of representing the nation in packed stadiums, all while keeping up with his BBA coursework. It is a balancing act that few manage, and fewer manage well.

Reflecting on his time at Chitkara University, Vihaan said:

"Walking back into campus after the World Cup win feels incredibly special. The support from Chitkara University from professors, mentors and friends played a solid part in my reaching where I am today. Balancing academics and cricket isn't easy, but they've always encouraged me to pursue my passion with confidence. I promise to continue striving for excellence and make both my country and Chitkara University proud."

As he now prepares for Ranji Trophy commitments and an IPL debut with RCB, the academic infrastructure that supported his journey remains part of the foundation.

How Do Indian Universities Support U-19 Cricket Talent?

India's U-19 cricket programme has become one of the most reliable talent pipelines in world cricket — six World Cup titles are evidence of a system that works. Increasingly, universities are a significant part of that system. Flexible scheduling, dedicated coaching infrastructure, sports scholarships, and institutional support for student-athletes allow young cricketers to pursue elite sport without abandoning their academic futures.

Chitkara University's approach reflects this shift. The institution provides structured support for student-athletes through dedicated coaches, adaptable academic timetables, and sports scholarships, recognising that talent develops best when it is not forced to choose between education and ambition. Vihaan Malhotra's trajectory, from campus nets to a World Cup final, is a direct product of that environment.

The broader cultural shift is worth noting, too. A career in professional cricket, once treated as a gamble, is now a credible, structured pathway, particularly as the IPL continues to create visible, financially viable careers for young players. For families weighing that decision, stories like Vihaan's carry real weight.
