Careers around ‘Heritage’ with a Master's in Heritage Management at Ahmedabad University in 2026

As the human race moves through the Anthropocene and faces an existential crisis, societies increasingly realise that learning from local heritages, traditional knowledge and wisdom might open up new ways of imagining the future. Understanding of heritage today is no longer confined to monuments, museums, and archaeological sites. It sits at the crossroads of culture, environment, development, and governance. As societies grapple with climate change, rapid urbanisation, social inequality, and questions of identity, heritage has emerged as a critical lens through which these challenges are understood and addressed. This transformation has significantly expanded career prospects and the nature of jobs in heritage management, opening up diverse and dynamic career pathways.

Traditionally, archaeology and heritage careers and architectural conservation formed the backbone of the sector. Professionals worked as conservators, site managers, curators, or heritage architects, often in highly specialised roles. Similarly, museum jobs after master’s degrees, such as curatorial roles, collections management, education, and exhibition design, remain vital pillars of the cultural ecosystem. Alongside these, cultural tourism careers have long attracted graduates interested in destination management, interpretation, and sustainable tourism planning.

However, the scope of heritage management has widened dramatically in the last decade. Climate change and environmental degradation now pose existential threats to both tangible and intangible heritage. As a result, heritage professionals are increasingly engaged in developing strategies towards adapting to climatic changes, disaster risk reduction, sustainability planning and community resilience. Heritage is also central to development practices, informing inclusive urban regeneration, rural livelihoods, indigenous knowledge systems, and social justice initiatives. These shifts have led to growing NGO jobs in heritage, where organisations work at the intersection of culture, sustainability, and development policies.

Despite such developments, proper academic training and research heritage management are not widely available. The Master's in Heritage Management at Ahmedabad University is thus uniquely positioned to address the shortage of skills, knowledge and understanding evident in the sector, which is a highly evolving and dynamic landscape. While many of the emerging domains, such as climate science or conservation engineering, are highly specialised fields, this programme offers something different and equally valuable: breadth, integration, and strategic insight. Rather than training narrow technical experts alone, it prepares graduates to become managers, coordinators, policy professionals, and strategists who can work across disciplines and institutions. This is why a career after Heritage Management often spans government, international organisations, museums, libraries, art houses, multilateral organisations, banks, research institutions, consultancy, and the wider cultural sector.

Graduates in heritage management find opportunities in Government jobs in heritage, working in archaeology departments, urban planning bodies, tourism boards, and cultural ministries. Others pursue vaunted UNESCO jobs or roles with international agencies focused on heritage policy, World Heritage governance, and cultural diplomacy. The programme’s flexibility also allows students to pursue specialisation aligned with their prior academic background, whether architecture, history, geography, environmental studies, social sciences, or management, while retaining a holistic understanding of the sector.

Working in the field of heritage is highly specialised, respected and prestigious; the salary after heritage management is commensurate with the prestige. Much like any industry, entry-level cultural sector roles may not be sky-high, but policy positions, international consultancy, senior management, and multilateral organisations offer competitive remuneration and long-term growth. Moreover, job satisfaction is very high; it also uniquely offers the opportunity of freelance work and independent consultancies, allowing one to strike the perfect work-life balance.

Ultimately, Heritage Management is no longer about protecting the past alone; it is about shaping sustainable futures. This is now being felt globally, and a cursory glance into any specific domain – such as climate change, urbanisation, conservation, tourism, art and crafts – will reveal how heritage is now integral to managing and governing these sustainably. For those seeking meaningful cultural sector careers that combine intellectual depth, social relevance, and global opportunity, this field offers both purpose and professional versatility. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, there is much less competition in the field compared to other conventional careers that are getting saturated fast, which allows trained heritage professionals and academics to have a great first-mover advantage, along with long-term career prospects.
