From Classroom to Community: How East Point Students are Solving Real-World Problems in 2026

Using Artificial Intelligence to Promote Better Health

One of the most impressive projects I recently reviewed was an AI-Powered Nutrition System for Enhanced Dietary Monitoring and Health Promotion.

The idea emerged from a simple yet significant challenge. Millions of people struggle with lifestyle-related health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and nutritional imbalance. While awareness about healthy eating is growing, tracking nutritional intake remains difficult for many individuals.

A team comprising Anshuman Kumar, Ashirbad Sai, Inderbir Singh, and Vyshnavi V. decided to address this challenge using Artificial Intelligence.

Under the guidance of Dr. Manimozhi Iyer, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the students developed a system that enables users to upload images of their meals through a mobile application. Using technologies such as Computer Vision, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the system identifies food items, analyses ingredients, estimates calorie content, and generates personalised nutritional recommendations.

What impressed me most was not merely the technical sophistication of the solution but the thought process behind it. The students understood that healthcare challenges often require simple and accessible interventions. Instead of expecting users to manually enter nutritional information, they created a system that allows a smartphone camera to become a personal nutrition assistant.

The system was trained using more than 10,000 food images and demonstrated nearly 90 percent accuracy during internal testing. More importantly, the students focused on making the application user-friendly and relevant to everyday life.

This project reflects a broader shift in higher education. Students are increasingly combining Artificial Intelligence with healthcare, wellness, and preventive medicine. Such interdisciplinary innovation represents the future of technology-enabled healthcare solutions.

Technology for Safety and Social Impact

Another project that left a lasting impression on me was the Smart Women Security System Using IoT.

Women's safety continues to be a major concern across societies. While technology alone cannot solve complex social issues, it can certainly empower individuals and provide timely assistance during emergencies.

Recognising this need, students Abhinav Mallappa Radder, Abhishek Gowda M.S., Madhan M.S., and Rekha S. developed a wearable safety device designed to provide real-time emergency support.

Guided by Dr. Kesavan M.V., the student team integrated GSM communication, GPS tracking, IoT sensors, health monitoring systems, and cloud connectivity into a compact wearable platform.

The device is capable of detecting distress situations and automatically sending emergency alerts along with live location information to designated contacts. It also includes fall detection, movement monitoring, alcohol detection capabilities, health parameter tracking, and emergency evidence collection features.

What makes this project particularly significant is its focus on accessibility and reliability. Many safety applications depend heavily on smartphones and internet connectivity. The students deliberately incorporated GSM-based communication to ensure that emergency alerts can be transmitted even under challenging circumstances.

As I listened to the students explain their design decisions, I was reminded that innovation becomes meaningful when it addresses genuine human concerns. This project was not developed merely to demonstrate technical expertise. It was created with the intention of making people safer.

Learning Beyond the Curriculum

Projects such as these represent something much larger than individual achievements. They illustrate how higher education is evolving.
