In the NIRF 2023 report, under the college category the top 10 colleges in Delhi are all affiliated to centrally-run Delhi University. These all colleges witnessed an enrollment that exceeded the actual intake capacity by more than 16 per cent for the batch of 2019-2022.
Out of them approximately 94.21 per cent of students successfully graduated. From the fresh graduates only 22.41 per cent accepted job offers, while over half of them opted for higher education.
Delhi has the second-highest number of ranked colleges in the NIRF's list of 100 colleges from across the country. Not just that, two colleges from Delhi had dominated the rankings, securing the top two positions among the top 17 colleges.
The Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) recently ranked 100 colleges across the country. With 32 colleges, Delhi has the second-highest number of ranked colleges in the NIRF's list. Out of the top 17 colleges, 10 colleges are from Delhi, Miranda House bagging the first and Hindu College taking the second spot.
The process of this ranking is such that colleges share data on intake capacity, enrollment, graduation and placement with NIRF for ranking and these are made public at the time when the rankings are announced. The latest round, NIRF 2023, is based on data from the 2021-22 academic year.

Analysing individual college performance, Shri Ram College of Commerce demonstrated consistent improvement in placements over the years, achieving an impressive 64.71 per cent placement rate in 2023 compared to 45 per cent in 2021. Unlike the other colleges that offer a wide range of programmes across fields, Shri Ram College of Commerce offers only two – Commerce and Economics.
Given below is how the top five of the 10 colleges did on placements individually.
On the other hand, Hindu College emerged as the second-best college in India, with a remarkable 79.37 per cent of its students choosing to pursue higher studies, the highest among Delhi colleges. Conversely, Shri Ram College of Commerce reported the lowest percentage of graduates opting for higher studies at 35.29 per cent.
Comparing the placement rates among the top five states, DU colleges exhibited a higher placement rate of 22.41 per cent among its top colleges compared to states like Kerala (17.4 per cent), West Bengal (11.3 per cent), and Maharashtra (9.12 per cent). But significantly lower than that of Tamil Nadu’s top 10 with the highest at 53.85 per cent.
Nevertheless, except for Lady Shri Ram College for Women, all other Delhi colleges experienced higher enrollments than their actual intake capacity, leading to a total of 1,814 excess enrollments across these top 10 institutions.

Delhi students demonstrated a propensity for pursuing higher studies, with around 52.84 per cent of fresh graduates opting for higher education. Delhi has the second lowest state after Tamil Nadu in terms of students choosing higher studies.
Tamil Nadu and Delhi ranked the highest in the number of colleges featured in the NIRF rankings, with 35 and 32 colleges respectively, followed by Kerala with 14 colleges, West Bengal with eight, and Maharashtra with three.
