Careers360: How do you feel about being accepted into Oxford University's Master's programme, and what aspects of this new academic journey are you most looking forward to?

Neharika: Oxford has always been my dream, just like it is for many others. When I began my application, someone told me that lots of people apply to Oxford, but very few get accepted. So, when I got my acceptance letter, I couldn't believe it. Oxford's reputation is unbeatable, and it was my biggest goal. I'm excited about the chance to study and work there, especially meeting people worldwide and learning from their different viewpoints. I plan to dive into the research environment and work hard in the lab.

Careers360: What led you to become interested in biotechnology research, and in what ways has Shoolini University helped you grow in this area?

Neharika: When I was eight years old, I had a significant moment that shaped my future. I learned that a classmate's parent had passed away from cancer. This news puzzled me because I couldn't understand why, with all our medical advancements, people were still dying from such diseases. This moment deeply affected me and fueled my determination to join the fight against illnesses like cancer. As I grew older, I realised that studying biotechnology could help me work towards finding cures for these diseases. I became particularly interested in research and laboratory work. At Shoolini University, my passion for biotechnology grew even more robust thanks to the stimulating academic curriculum. I had valuable opportunities to work in labs and write research papers. I am very thankful to my teachers and lab staff for their guidance, encouragement, and support.

Careers360: Could you describe meaningful experiences or projects from your time at Shoolini University that have contributed to your readiness for pursuing a Master's degree at Oxford?

Neharika: During my time at Shoolini, my professors encouraged me to get hands-on experience in the lab. Assistant Professor Nitika Thakur played a key role by introducing me to helpful seniors who taught me lab techniques and how to write research papers. I spent much of my free time in the lab, working closely with Assistant Professor Thakur and publishing three review papers. Additionally, I completed my dissertation project in Professor Saurabh Kulshrestha's lab with guidance from Assistant Professor Chandresh Kumari. I'm incredibly thankful for the support and guidance from all my teachers at Shoolini.

Careers360: What inspired you to apply to Oxford University for the Master's programme in Genomic Medicine, and how do you anticipate it will influence your career aspirations?

Neharika: Oxford's partnership with AstraZeneca to create one of the earliest COVID-19 vaccines caught my attention and made me want to study there. This vaccine showed how important it is to understand genetics, especially since many serious diseases have genetic causes. I'm eager to contribute to this field by working on new treatments and finding cures. The programme at Oxford will give me the knowledge and experience I need, helping me figure out which specific area I want to focus on for my PhD. Most of all, I want to be part of a community that actively seeks solutions during emergencies.

Careers360: What tips would you give to Shoolini students who aspire to attend esteemed international universities such as Oxford?

Neharika: Here's my advice: aim high and trust in yourself. Be passionate, put in the effort, and grab every opportunity to shape your future. Don't be afraid to push boundaries, explore, and take the lead. If you work hard towards your dreams, you'll get what you deserve and maybe even more.

Neharika's acceptance is an exciting moment, marking the start of a new journey filled with learning and discoveries. It's a chance for her to collaborate with brilliant minds, dive into groundbreaking research, and make a real impact. We're cheering for Neharika and can't wait to see all the incredible things she'll achieve!
