Karunya University Students Win Rs 10 Lakh Top Prize at Boeing Build 4.0 for Prosthetic Arm Innovation

A team of talented students from Karunya Deemed University, Coimbatore, has emerged victorious at the national-level Boeing Build 4.0 competition, winning the top prize of Rs 10 lakhs for their breakthrough innovation — a cost-effective Myoelectric Prosthetic Arm. The winning team includes Aashish Samuel, Arpit Chauhan, and V. Karthikeyan, all third-year students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

The project integrates advanced machine learning algorithms to interpret muscle signals with greater accuracy, enabling smoother and more responsive arm movements. Additionally, the use of lightweight and flexible materials enhances the comfort, usability, and durability of the prosthetic, making it an affordable solution for amputees across the country.

The competition witnessed participation from over 2,077 teams nationwide. After rigorous evaluation across four competitive rounds — narrowing from 2,077 to 85 in Round 2, then to 27 regional finalists in Round 3, and finally 7 top teams in the Grand Finale — the Karunya team was declared the national winner.

The award was presented by Mr. Dana Deasy, Chief Information Officer at Boeing and former CIO of the U.S. Department of Defense, alongside Mr. Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India & South Asia, during a grand celebration held in Bangalore.
