Careers360. How do you advise or suggest a student to choose a specialization?
Dr BR Santosh. Most students while choosing their specialization are faced with the dilemma with which area to opt for their specialization. And what are the career options available on completion of the programme in that particular specialization. So we recommend students to introspect and figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are and based on the introspection and understanding of their strengths and in consultation with their family & teachers They need to select the specialization which is best suited for them.
Having said that, the career opportunities in all five specializations are tremendous. So it all depends on how good the student is and how well they are able to get into the specialized area.
Careers360. What is the admission process for the Department of Commerce at MAHE? And what are the parameters based on which students are shortlisted?
Dr BR Santosh. In the admission process, we ask candidates to fill the application form first. Candidates who have applied are called for Personal Interview (PI), based on their performance in the PI round and their academic performance a rank list is prepared by the authorities and the top 120 students are given admission as the total intake capacity in the B.Com (Hons) programme is 120. For M.Com the intake capacity is 30, so top 30 students are given the masters programme.
Careers360. What can students expect in the Department of Commerce personal interview?
Dr BR Santosh. When it comes to Personal Interview, very fundamental questions are asked of the students based on their class 11th and 12th syllabus. In addition, few questions related to general awareness are also asked. Hence the PI round is more of an interaction rather than an interview. So the students need not be perturbed by the PI round.
Careers360. Does the B.Com programme offer any practical or industrial training?
Dr BR Santosh. Internships and project work is given to students in 6th and 8th semester. The project work assigned to students is of 14 to 15 weeks, in which students have to go to an industry and complete their project work. At the end of the 15th week students have to submit a dissertation and thesis. Based on their project work submission a viva is conducted. In addition to this small projects and courses are also provided to the students at the end of every semester. We also encourage students to take up courses which are available online for free. Which introduces the students to the practical world of the industry.
