CUET Updates 2025: The University Grant Commission has introduced some major changes in CUET exam this year including updates in exam mode, elimination of test subjects, exam duration, total number of questions asked and others. The CUET exam will be conducted in online mode only. The UGC has also dropped the total number of subjects in CUET UG to 37 from 63.

What’s New in CUET 2025? Major Changes and Guidelines Explained

The total number of subjects in CUET 2025 is 37, which includes 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and the General Aptitude Test. The CUET General Test is renamed as General Aptitude Test. Subjects like Fashion studies, Tourism studies, legal studies, Teaching aptitude, entrepreneurship and engineering graphics have been removed from CUET UG 2025. The UGC has also eliminated 20 foreign languages from CUET 2025. Admission to the eliminated subjects will be conducted based on the general aptitude test scores. This decision was made based on the recommendations made by UGC committee meeting held on November 13, 2024.

According to the CUET latest updates, it is compulsory to attempt all the questions in the exam, leaving no room for optional questions. Changes In CUET 2025

  • Exam in CBT mode: The CUET 2025 will be conducted in online mode only.

  • Reduced subjects: Applicants can select upto 5 subjects in CUET UG 2025, which were 6 last year.

  • Option to choose any subject: Candidates can choose any subject in CUET irrespective of their class 12 subjects.

  • Exam duration: The CUET exam duration will change to 60 mins for all subjects.

  • Less Test Subjects: The number of subjects have also been reduced to 37 from 63, which are generally based on the General Aptitude Test (GAP).

  • Necessary to attempt all questions: Students are required to attend all the questions in CUET exam 2025, unlike last year which offered a provision for optional questions.

  • CUET 2025 Domain Subjects: Students can now appear for only 23 domain subjects in the CUET 2025, They are:

  • CUET 2025 Language Subjects: For the 13 languages (English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu), the language-specific papers to test proficiency are to be conducted as per CUET-UG 2024. For all the remaining languages including foreign languages (20 as per CUET-UG 2024), the admissions in the programmes of these languages are to be made based on performance in the General Aptitude Test.

  • Deleted Domain Subjects in CUET 2025: The following domain-specific subjects are to be removed from the CUET 2025, They are:
    Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies and Engineering Graphics are to be discontinued. For these programmes, admissions are to be made on the basis of performance in the General Aptitude Test.

  • The General Test is changed into General Aptitude Test.

When will CUET Registration 2025 start?

The CUET UG 2025 registration date is expected to be around the second week of February. Aspirants can fill out the CUET application form 2025 by visiting the official website. The CUET registration deadline is likely to be in April. CUET application fees which are unpaid after the last date will result in the application being rejected.

CUET Exam Dates 2025

The National Testing Agency will likely conduct the CUET UG from May 15 to 2024 in online mode only. The CUET exam will be set according to the new guidelines released by the UGC. Details on CUET exam dates will be announced soon.

Backdrop of CUET Exam

The Common University Entrance Test was introduced in 2022 in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP, 2020). The CUET entrance aims to provide a common admission window for higher education in central universities. Every year above 10 lakh students appear for CUET exam which takes place at around 489 centres across India as well as in foreign countries. The CUET entrance test takes place in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and others. Until 2023, the entrance test used to be held in CBT mode only. In 2024, NTA decided to conduct the CUET in both pen and paper and CBT mode.
