NTA has revised the CUET mass communication syllabus, where aspirants can develop their more focus on media awareness, learn different new topics on reporting and editing, etc. The NTA has released the CUET Mass Communication syllabus 2026 at cuet.nta.nic.in. The CUET Mass Communication revised syllabus 2026 contains topics such as communication, Journalism, advertising, public relations, social media, cinema, and many others.

Changes in CUET Mass Communication Syllabus 2026

Unit 1:

  • Understanding Communication: A new sub-section has been added to Unit 1 covering levels of communication and models of communication.

Unit 2:

  • Understanding News: Unit 2 now includes a formal introduction to the definition, values, and components of news.

  • Reporting and Editing: New technical topics include the Inverted Pyramid structure, the 5W’s & 1H, headlines, and copy editing.

  • Photo Journalism: This is an entirely new section for 2026, focusing on the importance of photos, captions, visual depiction, and photo essays.

  • Media Laws: While the 2025 syllabus focused on ethical issues like plagiarism and fake news, the 2026 version explicitly adds "law and the media" to the curriculum.

Unit 3:

Introduction of Public Relations (PR)

One of the most substantial changes is the addition of Public Relations to Unit 3. In 2025, this unit focused primarily on Advertising and TV Production. In 2026, it is titled "Advertising and Public Relations" and includes:

  • Understanding PR and media management.

  • Building Brand Image.

  • Tools and Steps in PR including PR campaigns.

  • Crisis Management.

Unit 4:

  • Television: Beyond the production stages listed in 2025, the 2026 syllabus now includes programs, formats, and audiences.

  • Cinema: The 2026 version adds the production process and stages for both films and documentary making.

  • Social Media: The 2026 syllabus provides specific examples of platforms, such as social networking, blogging, and photo/video sharing, which were only listed as "self-explanatory" in 2025.

  • New Media: A new topic, Media convergence, has been added to the end of the 2026 syllabus.

Note - The syllabus has been reorganized from seven units in 2025 to eight units in 2026. This shift allows for the separation of Social Media and New Media into distinct chapters and the elevation of Public Relations to a core topic.

2. Journalism

(i) Understanding news

Definition, news values, components of news

(ii) Qualities of a good Journalist

An understanding of the following: a nose for news, inquisitiveness, language skills, trustworthiness and empathy,

(iii) Reporting and Editing techniques: Inverted Pyramid, 5W’s &1 H, Headlines, Copy editing

(iv) Photo Journalism

Importance of photos, captions, visual depiction, photo essays

(v) Media Laws & Ethical Issues in Journalism

A brief understanding of each of the following with examples: sensationalism, fake news, paid news, plagiarism, advertorials, partisan reporting, and sting operations, defamation, freedom of speech and expression, law and the media

(i) Writing for Radio

Characteristics of a Radio Script conversational language, active voice, simple sentences, avoidance of technical jargons, and capability of creating imageries (ii) Radio Recording

Brief understanding of the radio studio and transmission equipment: types of microphones; amplifier, sound mixer, speakers; audio recording.

6. Cinema

(i) History of Cinema

A brief understanding of the early experiments done by the following: Lumiere Brothers, John Grierson, Robert Flaherty, and Dada Saheb Phalke.

(ii) Production process and Cinema Genres

Production process and stages in film and documentary making. Defining genre theory: an understanding of the various types of genres (with suitable examples): action, westerns, comedy, crime, drama, fantasy/sci-fi, historical, animation, romance, and musical.

(iii) Cinema and Social Change: Parallel Cinema movement in India

Issues depicted and low-budget production process (with reference to examples such as Shyam Benegal’s Manthan).

7. Social Media

a. Definition of social media.

b. Types of social media platforms---social networking, blogging, photo and video sharing

c. Role of social media in a democracy. Role of social media in creating collective identities with reference to sharing of information; cyber activism (with suitable examples)

d. Cyber Crime. An understanding of online bullying, stalking, trolling, and online frauds.

e. Netiquettes. Meaning and importance of netiquettes; an understanding of netiquettes such as: identification of oneself; respect for others’ privacy, use of appropriate language and imagery; and do not spam.

CUET Mass Communication Exam Pattern 2026
