The University of Delhi is one of the largest university of the country providing admissions in various UG, PG, PhD and M.Phil programmes offered by its 91 affiliated colleges. It offers affordable education with state of art facilities. The university consists of some of the best arts, science and commerce colleges which always manages to find its place in NIRF ( National Institutional Ranking Framework) top colleges ranking. The colleges of Delhi University are spread over the national capital region in various campuses such as North, West, Dhaula Kuan, South, East, and Central Campus. There are around 500 academic programmes running in a total of 16 faculties and 86 departments of the university.

Every year lakhs of aspirants apply for admission in various colleges of the university, but only a few thousands of them end up securing a seat. Last year, around 3,67,895 students, registered themselves for a total of 69,554 undergraduate seats. For postgraduate admissions, the university receives over 1,54,075 registrations. The DU officials are also planning to conduct the complete admission process online this year. Until last year, the students have to visit their respective college/ department after the cut-off declaration for the document verification process.

Delhi University has started its admission process for the academic session 2020-21 with the release of application form in online mode. DU admission process 2020 will include both merit-based and entrance based selection. The admission process of DU has started the registration process and end it with the document verification process. The DU admission process is different for both UG and PG programmes. This article will help candidates who are not much informed about the DU Admission process to get a better understanding of the whole procedure.

DU 2020 Admission Process - An Overview

DU has released the dates for Delhi University 2020 admission process. Every year lakhs of students participate in the admission process of the university. The admission process takes place online. Candidate can apply for multiple programmes in a single DU application form.

For Undergraduate Programmes

Candidates who want to pursue undergraduate programmes from any of 91 affiliated colleges need to register online in UG admission portal and fill the DU application form. In the undergraduate programmes conducted in the university, seats are filled by ‘Best of Four’ merit selection, except for few programmes such as BA Hons. Humanities and Sciences, B.Tech, etc. The ‘Best of Four’ calculation is done on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates in their senior secondary examination.

For Postgraduate Programmes

Applicants who are looking for admission in the postgraduate courses of the university need to register online. The university fills 50% of total seats through direct admission of the students of the University of Delhi based on the merit. Remaining seats are filled with the help of an entrance examination followed by a group discussion and an interview. The university conducts the entrance examination in around 18 cities of the country.

The university release multiple DU cut-offs to fill the vacant seats until all the seats are filled. Shortlisted candidates are invited for the verification of documents. Candidates are required to download the DU PG admission form from the admission portal. The certificates are retained by the university until the admission process is over. In case of withdrawal of any admission, certificates are returned back to the candidates. After the approval of admission by the university, candidates are required to make the payment of admission fee. A successful payment confirms the claim of the seat by the candidate.

DU Eligibility Criteria 2020

The eligibility criteria is the minimum academic qualification and other necessary conditions that a candidate must have in order to be eligible for admission in Delhi University.

DU UG Eligibility Criteria 2020

Candidates who are applying for the undergraduate programmes in the university must have completed their senior secondary examination obtaining minimum marks as specified for each of the programmes. There is no minimum age bar for admission to the undergraduate programmes

DU PG Eligibility Criteria 2020

Candidates who wish to apply for admission in postgraduate programmes of the university must have completed their graduation with at least 55% marks or above in aggregate. Any candidate who does not meet the eligibility criteria will not be given admission in any programme even after qualifying the entrance examination.

How to Calculate Best of Four Marks

Delhi University allows the intake of the students in the undergraduate programmes on the basis of ‘Best of four’ calculation. Candidates are advised to check the following procedure for calculating ‘Best of Four’.

• The merit is calculated on the basis of one language and three academic/ elective subjects.

• The three academic/ elective subject includes -

1. One subject in which admission is sought - A disadvantage of 2.5% will be applicable, if the candidate doesn’t include the subject in ‘Best of Four’ for admissions in Honours programme.

2. Two academic/ elective subjects of List A - A disadvantage of 2.5% will be applicable in the percentage if the candidate doesn’t include the subjects involved in the List A.

• All the subjects included in the calculation of ‘Best of Four’ must have at least 70% theory component.

• In case the subject does not have 70% theory component and 30% practical component, the marks of theory and practical shall be converted into 70% and 30% on pro rata basis.

List A

It includes the disciplines offered by Delhi University which are considered as academic/ elective subjects to the three-year undergraduate programmes for the purpose of admission. All the discipline subjects must have at least 70 per cent component of theory and 30 per cent component of practical. Theory component doesn’t include internal assessments or continuous evaluation.

• For admission to B.A. (Hons.) Journalism (Hindi/ English), mass media studies will be treated as an academic subject.

• The ‘Best of Four’ calculation for admission to B.A. (Hons.) Applied Psychology and BA (Hons.) Psychology will be same.

• Admissions to BA (Hons.) Social Work will be based on ‘Best of Four’ subjects percentage.

• For admissions to BA (Hons.) Political Science, legal Studies will be treated at par with academic/elective subjects

• Business Mathematics and Mathematics are treated as same for admissions to B.Com (Hons.) / B.Com only.

• Admissions to BA (Hons.) in Hindi Patrakarita and BA (Hons.) in Journalism will be similar to BA (Hons.) Hindi and BA (Hons.) based on ‘Best of Four’ subjects percentage.

• Applicants must have studied and passed Mathematics at the qualifying exam for admission in B.A.Hons. in Economics.

• Candidates must have studied and passed the language in the qualifying exam and will need to include the same for calculating in ‘Best of Four’ percentage to seek admissions to Honours in English and Hindi.

• A candidate becomes liable to a disadvantage of 5% in ‘Best of Four subjects’, if he or she has not studied the language at the qualifying exam level and seeking admission to Honours in that language.

• Music and Physical Education are considered as academic/ elective only for Honours in Music and Physical Education.

• A disadvantage of a maximum of 5 percent may be imposed on the ‘Best of Four’ percentage if there is any case of change of stream,. Moreover, the college will have to notify the actual deduction of a maximum of 5 percent on their websites and intimate the same to the University

• If a candidate wants to enroll to honours in any language programme which he or she has studied at the qualifying exam level, an advantage of 2% over the other candidates will be offered in ‘Best of four’ subjects.

• A disadvantage of 2.5% each in ‘Best of Four’ will be levied for admissions to B.A/ B.Com besides a disadvantage due to change in stream in case if one or more than one subjects which is not included in List A is considered for ‘Best of Four’ calculation.

• The core language will be treated as language and elective language will be considered as academic/ elective subject if the candidate has studied both elective and core in any languages.

• If any candidates wants admission in to BA Vocational only, related vocational subjects will be treated at par with academic/ elective subjects.

• An advantage of upto 10% may be given in ‘Best Four’ in those colleges where MIL(Modern Indian Language) is offered as a subject to the candidates opting for Modern Indian Language (except Hindi).

• A maximum of two vocational subjects are included for ‘Calculation of Best Four’ for admission to vocational courses.

How to Fill DU 2020 Application Form

DU Admission process 2020 begins with the online registration process. Given below is the detailed step by step procedure.

1. Registration

• Visit to the DU Admission portal and click on ‘New Applicant Signup’ tab.

• Candidates need to create the new user account. To do so, click on ‘New Registration’ link

• Enter all the details in the fields marked with (*) on the ‘Create New Account’ page.

• Candidates must note that they need to have a valid e-mail ID and Mobile Number before starting the registration process. In case the applicants do not have an e-mail ID they are advised to create one as all the communications will be made through the e-mail ID given during the registration process.

• Enter email ID and confirm the same.

• Candidates need to select a security question from the drop-down box given and enter a Security Answer for the same.

• Create a password with a minimum of eight characters and confirm it.

• Enter the ‘Captcha’ given after all the details are filled.

• After entering all the details click on ‘Register’ tab towards the end of the page

• A page carrying the candidates login credential will appear. Click on the Click here to save this information for future reference which will, in turn, save the details in the form of a pdf titled ‘Registration Detail.pdf’.

• Candidates will receive a confirmation of the registration process on their email ID and registered mobile number

• Click on the ‘Continue to homepage’ tab to continue with the application form.

2. Filling Application Form

• After the registration process is complete click on the ‘Continue to homepage’ tab.

• Click on the ‘Registered candidates Sign in’.

• Candidates will now be directed to the login page where they need to enter the Username and Password created during the registration.

• Enter the ‘Captcha’ and click on ‘Login’.

A. Personal Details

In this section of the application form the fields of name, email ID will be filled automatically.

Candidates need to enter the details in the following fields

• Gender

• Date of Birth

• Aadhar Card Number

• Nationality

• Other Category/ Quota (Kashmiri Migrant (KM), Children/Widow of Armed Forces Personnel (CW), Person with disability (PwD) and the Ward Quota)

• Correspondence Address

Candidates must click on the ‘Submit’ button which will direct them to a preview of the application form after entering all the above details.

Incase candidates need to make any changes they can click on the ‘edit’ button towards the end.

In case the candidates want to continue with the application process click on the Next button towards the end.

B. Bank Details

Candidates need to give their bank account details including the Account Number and IFSC code.

In case of a refund the money will be transferred to the given account details.

C. Academic Details

In this section candidates must enter their Class 12 examination board

• Roll number as in the Class 12 examination Admit Card

• Year of Passing

• Status of Results

After entering all the details click on the submit button. A preview of these sections will be displayed. Candidates can check through all the details entered and in case of a correction click on the edit button and make the necessary changes. If there are no corrections candidates can move on to the next step by clicking on the ‘Next’ button.

D. Merit-Based Course Selection

Here candidates can select the programmes they wish to apply for. In case candidates want to check the eligibility of the programme they can click on ‘i’. Candidates can select any number of programmes. If the candidate applying is a female they will be considered under the NCWEB (Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board) category. If a candidate is applying under the sports and ECA (Extra Curricular Activities) category they need to select ‘Yes’ under this section. Sports candidates will choose the game/sport in which they have excelled and provide all the details and certificates asked for. ECA candidates also need to choose the event in which they have excelled. Click on the submit button and click on ‘Next’ to move on to the next session

After selecting the number of programmes click on Submit to see the preview and click on Next in case there are no corrections to be made.

E. Entrance-based course selection

If the programmes the candidates wish to apply for are entrance based they can select the programmes under this section. Candidates can select as many programmes as possible.

3. Documents Upload

Candidates are required to upload the scanned images of the following documents

• Self Attested Class X certificate/ Mark Sheet containing Date of Birth.

• Self-attested Class XII Marks Sheet (In case the Marks Sheet is not issued by the Board, the self-attested copy of the Marks Sheet downloaded from the respective Board’s website should be uploaded).

• Self-attested copy of the valid OBC/SC/ST/PwD/KM/CW certificates if applicable

• Self-attested copies of Sports/ECA certificates, if applicable.

• Passport size photograph

• Scanned image of the signature

Candidates must note that they will not be allowed to pay the application fee without uploading the necessary documents. After the documents are uploaded candidates will be able to see a complete preview of the application form. Candidates can check all the details they have entered and move on to the final step of Application Fee payment

4. Application Fee Payment

Candidates need to pay the application form online as per their category. The application fee varies depending upon the social category of the candidates. The application fee is non-refundable. Payment can be made online either by debit card, credit card or net banking.

DU Cut Off 2020

The University of Delhi release multiple cut off for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes each year. Delhi University starts releasing DU cut off until all the seats in the affiliated colleges are not filled. The cut off for undergraduate programmes is based on the ‘Best of Four’ marks entered by the candidates in the application form. The cut off for the postgraduate programmes depends upon the marks obtained in the entrance examination. The cutoffs for different programmes depends upon the number of vacant seats, previous year cut off trends, the number of applicants, etc. Candidates who qualify the cutoff are supposed to attend the document verification process along with all the relevant documents required. The dates for the document verification will be mentioned by the colleges when they release the individual cutoff lists.

Delhi University Entrance Test 2020

For admissions in PG programmes and few UG programmes, the university conducts an entrance test known as Delhi University Entrance Test or DUET. The entrance test was conducted from September 6 to 11 in online mode. The exam conducting body of DUET is National Testing Agency (NTA). The mode of examinations is online. The duration of the entrance test is two hours. The admit card of DUET has been released on August 29. The entrance test is followed by an interview/ group discussion. The result of the entrance test was announced on October 27.

What to do After Release of DU Cut off 2020

• Candidates are required to download the admission application form after the cutoffs are declared. To do so, they need to login on the admission portal to select the course and college. Before making any selection, candidates must check if they satisfy the cut-off of the different programme.

• Given below are the documents that a candidate must carry with them after the selection of the course for the purpose of verification.

1. Class 10 Board Examination Certificate

2. Class 10 mark sheet

3. Class 12 mark sheet

4. Class 12 provisional certificate/ original certificate

5. Conduct certificate

6. Category (SC/ST/PwD/CW (Children or Widows of Armed Forces/ KM) certificate (If applicable)

After the successful verification of the documents, candidates need to again visit to the admission portal and pay the admission fee online to complete the admission process.

If a candidate wants to change his or her selection of college or course, the following steps are to be followed:

• Cancel the admission claim online and pay the requisite admission cancellation/ withdrawal fee.

• Take a printout of the receipt of withdrawal/ cancellation fee.

• Withdraw the original certificates by submitting the same receipt to the previously selected college.

• Follow the process of selecting college and course again. Candidate needs to pay only the balance fee in the subsequent admission. Any extra amount paid by the student will be refunded to the bank account of the candidate after the last date of admission.
