    The Jawaharlal Nehru University offers separate hostel facilities allocated for men and women which are grouped and categorised into different Khands (sections) which includes 3 to 4 hostels for administrative convenience according to the JNU hostel manual.     JNU Hostel Administration Constituents

    Behind the proper function and maintenance of the JNU hostel, the staff administration comes into the picture. According to the JNU hostel manual, the administration comprises the Dean, provosts, senior warden, mess committee, hostel committee, etc.

    Candidates can refer to the following list present below to know the roles and responsibilities of the administration constituents as per the JNU hostel manual.

    • Dean of Students: The Head of the Department who takes care of students’ general welfare and supervises the activities of Sr. Wardens and Provosts. The Dean is assisted by the Provosts of Khands and Associate Dean of Students. The Asstt. Registrar/ Dy. Registrar (IHA) supports and advises the Dean on the general administration functions.

    • Provosts: The staff who takes care of the affairs of their allocated Khand and advise the wardens on their activities.

    • Sr. Warden: The staff who plays the role of an executive and principal authority in every issue concerned with the resident student’s discipline, welfare, security and administration of the hostel. They are also helped by other wardens such as Warden (Mess), Warden (Health and Recreation), Warden (Maintenance & Sanitation), Cashier, Caretaker, Office Incharge, etc.

    • Mess Committee: It comprises Warden (Mess) chosen as an ex-officio Chairman and six students which are elected by the residents of every hostel to supervise the mess activities.

    • Hostel Committee: It comprises a President and six members elected directly by the General Body of the concerned hostel. The committee actively participates/collaborates with the Wardens in the routine functions and manages all the activities of the Hostel to ensure a smooth operation.

    JNU Hostel Amenities

    The JNU facilities consist of 18 hostels for the girls and boys and also a complex to accommodate the married students which houses single and double seated rooms. Every resident is offered a chair, study table, book shelf, and bed whereas each room consists of two built-in cupboards coupled with doors. Water dispensers are set up at proper locations all across the building to render filtered and safe drinking water to the students. There is a 24*7 water supply when it comes to toilets, washrooms, and mess. The JNU hostel renders mess facilities throughout the year where the student residents are offered with healthy, nutritious, and delicious cuisines at a very affordable fee.

    According to the JNU hostel manual, the mess is managed and maintained by a private contractor on the basis of a no-profit and no-less deal. The activities of the mess are conducted by an active participation of the JNU students themselves. Mess committee includes six student members which are duly elected by the residents. They decide the Menu collectively, miscellaneous issues of the Mess, and are in regular touch with the rest of the residents for a good feedback mechanism on the food quality served. Various JNU hostels render a laundry facility and tea stalls for the students within the premises and vicinity. The hostel offers a television room and a gymnasium room each for the boys and girls wing. The visitor’s rooms and reading rooms are mutual for the student residents according to the JNU hostel draft manual.

    The residents are also offered with proper sporting facilities to carry out their sports activities. The sports facilities of the hostel include a badminton court, volleyball ground, and table tennis. It aims at providing a genuine blend of study and cohesive social environment for the students of JNU. The JNU hostel is constructed in such a manner that its student residents get proper ventilation and natural light. In front of the hostel, there is a marvellous green lawn which is surrounded by trees such as neem, amaltash, keekar, etc for the glimpse of aesthetic beauty of nature.

    The JNU hostel serves many snacks and tea shops, cobbler shop, laundry, confectionery for students ease of life.     JNU Hostel Eligibility Criteria

    There are some crucial factors basis on which the JNU hostel is allotted to the students. The important eligibility factors are presented in brief for students easy reference as per JNU hostel draft manual:

    • Only those students who enroll for admissions to a full-time programme are considered for hostel allotment.

    • The aspiring students who come from outside Delhi region will be given the first priority over the native students. The native students will be considered for accommodation only after the outside students have been allotted the JNU hostel.

    • Allotment is made on the basis of the selected merit lists provided by the Admission Branch and on their hostel allotment application which is submitted to the Dean of Students’ Office.

    • A seat/room may be allocated to a student(s) by the Dean of Students on medical grounds, considering a serious ailment and merits of that case.

    Note: Students who are either employed for more than 3 months with salary or those who join any kind of course outside of JNU during their study in the form of open and distance learning mode will lose their JNU hostel accommodation.

    JNU Hostel Eligibility Criteria - Reserved Category Students

    • According to the JNU hostel manual draft, some reservations may be given to those students who belong to the SC/ST & P.H. categories in the hostel seats according to their quota fixated by the university.

    • In a similar way, certain rooms are reserved for the Non-Resident foreign nationals i.e. the foreign nationals not residing in India, joining the various full-time programmes, in a way to provide accommodation facilities at the earliest.

    Note: The students who don’t pay the JNU hostel fees won’t be allocated any hostel room. They need to get their dues cleared with the Finance & Accounts Branch of the University.

    JNU Hostel Manual - Eviction

    Every university lays down some strict rules and regulations when it comes to the hostel code of conduct, so does the JNU hostel manuals entails. The eviction policy of JNU brings down all the conditions on which the student will have to face eviction and its immediate consequences. Candidates can refer to the points listed down below for a better clarity on the eviction policy as per the JNU hostel manual.

    • A student resident may get evicted from the JNU hostel on account of any discipline breach, misconduct, hostel norms or mess rules, not complying with the academic requirements as specified either in the University’ Academic Ordinances.

    • The Senior Warden will commence the hostel eviction process in consultation with the Provost of the Khand or the Dean of Students if in case the Provost designation is vacant.

    • Before getting evicted, the concerned student resident will be given a hostel eviction notice (Form IHA-ll), five days in advance by the Senior Warden so that they stay informed about the imposed action and can take care of the personal belongings. Henceforth, they will have to vacate the allocated room on or prior to the date fixated for eviction as per JNU hostel draft manual.

    • If the student resident does not comply with vacating the hostel by the stipulated date specified then the room’s lock will have to be broken in the presence of the Senior Warden, Security Officer or his representative, Caretaker, and the Chief Proctor or his representative, wherever and whenever necessary as per the JNU hostel manual.

    • If the student resident has been charged with guilt of missing or damaging the furniture/ articles/fixtures, then the entire cost of the article or the damages of the articles shall be recovered along with eviction from JNU hostel. According to the JNU hostel manual draft, one thing will be kept in consideration which is that the original cost of the article minus the depreciation value will be decided as per the discretion of the Maintenance Warden.

    • According to the JNU hostel manual, in case the room-mate or third room-mate gets impacted by the eviction of the defaulter student resident, then they may get some accompaniment of the Sr. Warden in another room if possible.

    JNU Hostel Manual - Refund of Security

    Any student who is about to get evicted from the hostel will have to face the penalty as a consequence as briefed in the JNU hostel manual. Let’s understand the consequence in context of security refund payment in a brief manner for a better clarity:

    • A student getting evicted from the hostel and seeking refund of mess security charges will have to apply to the Warden(Mess) in a prescribed format. The Warden then forwards the application over to the Office Incharge with his personal recommendation and expenditure sanction as per the JNU hostel manual.

    • The evicted student receives a no dues certificate from the Mess Manager, Caretaker, and the Cashier which the student has to retain in his personal file.

    • After recovering the amount due from the student resident for the damage of the mess or furniture items etc. a contingent bill for refund of security is then prepared by the Cashier according to the JNU hostel manual draft. The bill is then checked by the Office Incharge and the amount gets refunded to the student as per the dated signatures.

    • The Cashier keeps a note of the refund payment made to the student in the student's personal ledger which is duly attested by the Office Incharge along with date and signature.
