Innovative eUniv: A boon for online learning

Innovative eUniv - It was way back in 2013 that former President of India Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam launched eUniv. Since then, it has made rapid progress and has fully integrated into our academic culture. It is widely acknowledged that using specialized technology for delivery improves educational quality by allowing flexible and self-paced learning. Students can get easy and timely access to learning material at any time before or after class, freeing up classroom time for direct teacher-student interaction. This, in turn, allows for a greater emphasis on application and problem-solving in the learning process, ensuring a structured learning environment.

Dr Ashoo Khosla, Head of Learning Support and Executive Education at Shoolini University, elaborated on the idea behind eUniv and how she planned to adapt it to futuristic needs. With the aim to revolutionize online learning, she said she conceptualized eUniv many years ago. “The story unfolded when my husband, Ashish Khosla, Shoolini University founder and Dean of the Yogananda School of AI, Computers and Data Science, introduced me to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). He explored and developed this platform, where you can learn anything from any teacher at the best universities of the world, and that too from the comfort of your homes. Inspired by this, we launched a learning management system for online education and decided to call it eUniv.”

Continuously evolving, she said there were many learning management system platforms in the world. “What we use is called Moodle - it's an open learning platform. Open platforms are open software. The advantage? Anybody can work on it, modify it, and customize it from anywhere in the world. Since 2012, our IT team has been working on it, customizing it as per our needs. We have been using it much before the pandemic hit us and the world was forced to shift to online mode.”

With the Covid outbreak, when the online mode became the norm, the Big Blue Button was integrated into it, making it a Zoom-like app for face-to-face interaction with teachers in real-time. Now, the eUniv is being adapted for science students. At present, they are unable to draw diagrams or formulas. “I have personally taken up this challenge and am bringing technological solutions. We will soon integrate it with this platform and continue to grow and evolve,” she emphasized.

According to Dr Ashoo Khosla, the future of education was hybrid. “Learning should be without boundaries and students should have the freedom to learn from a teacher sitting anywhere in the world. “And that is our goal. We want to see how much of that online we can retain. Can we continue carrying it to the future, even when colleges and schools open and offline classes resume in full force,” she asks.
