Careers360: Tell us about your domain and your work profile. At the professional level, did you pursue the same field you were interested in or you switched?

Atul: I joined MathWorks as a Software Engineer in the Software Foundations team.

I am currently working on building and maintaining the foundation of our MATLAB and Simulink products, as well as contributing to the development of new features and tools. My domain is mostly focused on Modern C++ and JavaScript. I am happy to state that I am pursuing a career in the same field that I am interested in. My interest in computer science has been consistent, and I have shaped my education, career, and personal development accordingly.

Careers360: Can you briefly tell us about your career path so far?

Atul: I studied Computer Science and Engineering at Himalayan School of Science & Technology, SRHU, Dehradun, where I completed my B.Tech in 2020. After completing my bachelor's degree, I cleared the GATE CSE exam in 2020, and I decided to pursue my master's degree in CSE from IIIT Delhi.

After completing my Master's in 2022, I joined MathWorks as a Software Engineer.

Careers360: Is the Industry work different from what you learnt at Himalayan School of Science & Technology, SHU?

Atul: There is some difference between what I learned during my academic studies and what I do in the industry. In college, I learned fundamental computer science concepts, theoretical knowledge, and practical exposure to some extent. On the other hand, my current job involves applying those concepts and knowledge, developing new skills, and solving real-world problems. That being said, the foundation I gained from my college education proved to be valuable in my professional career. It gave me the necessary knowledge and skillsets needed to succeed in my job.

Careers360: How do you think your time in college has added value to your life, both professional and personal?

Atul: My time in college has been extremely valuable to me, both professionally and personally. Professionally, college provided me with a strong foundation in computer science concepts and programming languages, which proved to be beneficial when I started my career. It also helped me develop critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills that are essential in the software industry. On a personal level, college helped me develop my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Ecosystem in the college allowed me to participation in group projects, club activities, and events that helped me interact with different people and develop a network of friends.

Careers360: What was your initial thought process when you joined HSST?

Atul: When I joined college, my initial thought process was to explore the field of computer science and engineering, and gain a comprehensive understanding of fundamental computer science concepts. My ultimate goal was to graduate with a strong foundation in computer science concepts, real-world experience, and an interdisciplinary perspective that could prepare me for a career in the software industry or graduate studies.

Careers360: You must have spent a memorable time at your College. Do you miss being a part of it? Share a few good memories.

Atul: Yes, I definitely had some memorable experiences during my time at Swami Rama Himalayan University. The campus environment was very supportive, and the faculty was always ready to help. I participated in various college competitions, seminars, and workshops where I had a lot of fun and learned a lot too.

One of my favourite memories was during my fourth year when our team participated in the university cricket tournament, and we won that tournament.

Careers360: Briefly take us through your life at the campus, the activities you used to do and your routine life.

Atul: During my stay at SRHU, I prioritized academics and extracurricular activities equally. I attended lectures regularly, participated in class activities and discussions, and made good use of my study time. Outside of the classroom, I used to involve myself in sports and project workshops, I used to spend time in labs which helped me meet new people, develop my personality, and build a network.

Careers360: Apart from academics, what were the other activities you were involved in and how did it enrich your life?

Atul: Apart from academics, I was involved in sports such as cricket and football during my college days, and I also participated in few workshops and seminars related to IOT, Android App development and microcontrollers. I also went to a few project exhibitions where our projects were highly appreciated, which helped us to gain exposure and network with industry professionals.

Participating in extracurricular activities helped me in various ways. Being a part of sports activities allowed me to improve my physical fitness and enhance my team spirit and make new friends.

Careers360: How did you keep yourself updated with the industrial requirements and what was the role of the institute in it?

Atul: During my college years, I stayed updated about industrial requirements and advancements by reading technology blogs, participating in workshops and seminars, attending guest lectures, and following industry experts on social media platforms. The institute played a crucial role in providing exposure to the latest trends and technologies by organizing workshops, guest lectures, and seminars.

Careers360: You are a proud alumnus of this top College. What is the best part of HSST from a student’s perspective?

Atul: I think the best part of college is the overall learning experience, both academically and personally. Academically, college provided me with a strong foundation in computer science concepts and programming languages, which proved beneficial in my career. The hands-on experience obtained through college projects and workshops equipped me to approach real-world problems.

Careers360: What is your suggestion/guidance for the B.Tech CSE aspirants?

Atul: I recommend prioritizing academics by attending lectures, planning study time, and actively participating in class. Stay curious, attend workshops and hackathons to learn and apply skills creatively. Maintain a healthy balance between academic and personal life by engaging in extracurricular activities and sports. Network with peers and faculty members through club activities and college events. Gain practical experience by participating in internships, co-op programs, and project exhibitions to apply your skills to real-world problems and learn from industry experts. These tips can help prepare engineering students for a rewarding and successful career.
