Generations have recognized a social bond between a university and the society. Recognized as escalators, universities are the constructor of talent and thought factories where the vision, and idealism of great minds can be applied to advancing our intellectual, cultural and monetary well-being.
Society stands in need for not only professionals, but also sensitive intellectuals and decisive citizens. Educational qualification transforms students into responsible adults with good social status. Universities have the responsibility to ‘communicate the power of education to the hearts and minds’ of commons. The challenges of universities are economic growth with special emphasis on producing talent who has the capability to compete globally; job creation and the elimination of unemployment. Universities acknowledge ongoing challenges present in the world and evolve to serve a new age. With the changing world universities (society of learning) should:
Be learner-centric: Universities must become learner-centered institutions. They should focus more on what students need to learn than what educators wish to teach. Successful universities are capable of being creative and quick to respond so as to foster success by becoming student-centric.
Provide education for lifelong learning: Students and parents look for a major shift in the methods from the traditional and old methods of imparting education.
Be interactive and collaborative: New form of pedagogy modified to changing social requirements is already emerging. Using new technologies to break the constraint of time and space, creating compatibility between learning opportunities with lifestyles and career demand; and collective learning techniques completely reach the tech- savvy generation.
Diverse culture for diverse education: The great diversity denominating higher education serves multifarious goals of diverse population. Through the propagation of networks, transformation can take place at the scale that is needed in order to advance the present global knowledge economy.
Be intelligent and adaptive: Knowledge and distributed-intelligence technology advance the edifice of a learning environment that is tailored to the demands of the students.
Be unique kinds of global institutions: Universities are anticipated to be permanent. When sensibly planned, administered and financed, universities are entities in a global society. Universities must be equipped to start delivering higher training in a manner that bequeath status upon students leading the results they achieve rather than the uniqueness and excellence of their freshman (student) class.
In higher education institutions, alterations and modification are required for the betterment of the society. Missouri State University operates with the same mission.
