The Indian engineering institutions can pat their back as more than one bright spots have emerged in the recently released Subject-wise Ranking of World Universities 2018 by Times Higher Education (THE). In the Engineering and Technology category, 11 institutions have figured among the top 500 globally lead by IISc. The list includes National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, standing alongside the big boys IITs and IISc Bangalore. In the Computer Science Rankings, six Indian institutions have been ranked among the top 500 globally against only two last year.
The best among the Indian institutions is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore ranked at 89, a 10 position improvement from its previous year’s rank (99th) in the Engineering and Technology category. In the Computer Science Ranking, IISc has been ranked in the range of 101–125 with an overall score of 49.2–52.7, last year it was ranked at 71.
Other institutions that have been ranked among the best Engineering and Technology Universities globally are IIT Bombay (126–150), IIT Delhi (201–250), IIT Kanpur (201–250), IIT Kharagpur (201–250), IIT Madras (251–300), IIT Roorkee (251–300), IIT Guwahati (301–400), Jadavpur University (401–500), NIT Rourkela (401–500), Tezpur University (401–500).
In the Computer Science Ranking, the best among the technology institutions are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, all the three have been ranked in the range of 126-150 with a score in the range of 46.7–49.1. The other two institutions ranked among the top 500 globally are also the IITs, the IIT Madras has been ranked in the range of 201–250 and IIT Kanpur stands at 251–300.
In the overall Ranking, the majority in the top 10 are from USA and UK with Stanford University (USA) leading the pack, followed by California Institute of Technology (USA) and University of Oxford (UK).
The good news for Asian Universities is that among the top 500 universities, 132 institutions are from Asia when compared with 127 from the United States and Canada. Peking University from China has been ranked 7th, a five position improvement from its last years Rank of 12th.
The 2018 THE World University Subject-wise Rankings employs the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields. The universities have been grouped broadly under five major categories, Citation, Industry Income, International Outlook, Research and Teaching and based on these scores have been awarded.
The Rankings highlights the universities that are leading across electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical and general engineering subjects.
