Indian Institute of Planning and Management is not recognized by UGC and the institution is neither entitled to award degrees like MBA, BBA, and BCA, UGC has said in a public notification.
The notification dated May 18, 2014, University Grants Commission (UGC), said, “Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), New Delhi is not a University within the meaning of Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.”
It further added, “as per Section 22 of University Grants Commission Act, 1956, the Indian Institute of Planning and Management does not have the right of conferring or granting degrees as specified by the university Grants Commission under Section 22 (3) of the University Grants Commission Act.”
University Grants Commission is a statutory body of the Government of India established in 1956 through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India. Bringing clarity on IIPM’s academic validity, the UGC said that Indian Institute of Planning and Management is not entitled to award MBA/BBA/BCA degree.
IIPM is run by IIPM Group which runs multiple institutes for higher education.
Cautioning Public and students, UGC said that only those institutions which are established either by a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an Institution deemed to be university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act or an institution especially empowered Parliament to award degree, can confer or grant degrees which are specified by the UGC under Section 22 (3) of the UGC Act, 1956.
UGC issues such public notice to keep students and parents informed on the status of different institutions.
