The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed the University of Delhi to abolish its FYUP and admit students to its undergraduate admission for academic year 2014 in 3-year structure only. The UGC also constituted a standing committee to advise Delhi University over migration from FYUP to the 3-year undergraduate programmes.
In a public notification, UGC said that the 4-year undergraduate programmes launched by Delhi University were not in consonance with the national policy on Education and 10+2+3 structure envisaged under it. It said that since DU has not followed the prescribed procedure, it will have to scrap the current structure and bring back the 3-year undergraduate programmes prevalent to FYUP.

“After taking into consideration the larger interest of students the UGC has directed the DU vide its orders dated June 20 and 22, that admission for the academic year 2014-15 to the general degree programmes and various programmes under the University shall only be to the 3-year undergraduate programmes which were prevalent to the introduction of FYUP,” the UGC said.
It added that “The University of Delhi or any of the colleges under it shall not admit students to the FYUP academic year 2014-15.”
Further UGC has also cautioned students to seek admission in the colleges of Delhi University for the three year undergraduate programmes only and not to FYUP. “Students are hereby informed that they shall seek admission in a college of the University of Delhi only to the 3-year undergraduate programmea which were prevalent prior to the introduction of FYUP and not to FYUP and shall pay fees only for the 3-year programme”, UGC chairman added.
The UGC order has come just before the University is going to announce its first cut-off list for admissions to various undergraduate courses on June 24. It is still not clear whether its affiliated colleges will come up with a revised cut-off list, as the whole structure of programmes will change now.
Earlier, on June 20, UGC had issued an order to Delhi University to discontinue with the FYUP and continue with the process of admissions that was in place earlier to the introduction of FYUP.
In response to the order, DU had held a meeting of academic council which on June 21 resolved to comply with the admission structure in accordance with National Policy on Education (NPE).
It however also clarified that the present FYUP is already in synch with NPE and the fourth year in FYUP structure was optional for those wish to get Honours in each discipline. “The academic council has clarified that the fourth year of study is an optional year for those students who wish to obtain a BA Honours/B.Sc Honours/B.Com Honours/B.Tech UG Degree,” the DU officials had noted in their resolution.
Further to this, Mr. Malay Neerav, Joint Dean Student’s Welfare also added that the students would be admitted into the three year Bachelor’s Degree programme in the Discipline I (Major Subject) and would graduate with the corresponding degree on the completion of three years which is in conformity with the NPE 10+2+3 structure.
