UGC Directs DU to begin admissions in 3-yr Structure; Protests continue on FYUP

UGC Directs DU to begin admissions in 3-yr Structure; Protests continue on FYUP – The University Grants Commission (UGC) has rejected a proposal sent by Delhi University to end the logjam over Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) on June 26 and directed the central university to begin the admission process at the earliest under 3-yr structure. Earlier on June 26, DU had offered an alternative proposal to the UGC after the latter asked it to send a compliance report for rolling back FYUP.

Reverting to the proposal of DU where the varsity sought to change its undergraduate into 3-year structure except 4-year B.Tech programme, UGC asked the central university to begin the admissions as per its earlier direction.

The letter which was sent to the UGC by DU Office mentioned that the proposal for retaining 4-year had been proposed by some eminent citizens. “A proposal received by some eminent citizens has been sent to the UGC and is under our active consideration. This proposal draws on some existing and approved courses and will supplement courses that existed under the older undergraduate courses under the earlier semester system,” the letter sent by DU to the UGC read.

Further, DU Registrar, Ms. Alka Sharma also confirmed that the proposal would lead to admission of the students to a 3-year UG programme with Honours and would avert fresh registrations for admission year. Ms. Alka Sharma also added that the eminent citizens are a group of 21 people including Vice Chancellors of IP University, Panjab University and some eminent principals and professors. “They (group of 21 people) had suggested a six-point formula for providing a programme of study,” she said.

Meanwhile Malay Neerav, Media Coordinator and Joint Dean Students Welfare said that the UGC has been writing letters to the university advising to start admissions based on 3-year UG procedure but it is obvious that the university needed more time to follow the old procedure. “We have told them (UGC) that we need time to follow the old procedure because there are course committees, statutory bodies and they will need to meet for that purpose. However if we can tweak the existing FYUP into prevalent 3-year UG programme, we can start admitting the students at the earliest,” he added.

The DU teachers are also divided on FYUP roll-back. While Nandita Narain, DUTA President appealed to president to take cognizance of the impasse, President of Academics for Association and Development (AAD), Aditya Narain Mishra said that constitution of a committee by UGC itself is an assault on the autonomy of DU.

Amidst of this, different student wings continued protests in the University campus on UG structure change.
