Smart India Hackathon 2017: Thapar University secures second runner-up spot

A six member team from Thapar University, Patiala, achieved the position of second runner-up in the ‘Smart India Hackathon 2017’ held in Jaipur. Organized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), National Informatics Centre (NIC) and MyGov, the Hackathon saw over 2100 technical institutes from across 33 locations in India concurrently compete for top honors in a 36 hour long digital programming marathon. The event had earlier been declared open by Union HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar, who also served as its Chief Patron.

As per the Hackathon’s objective, participating teams were required to offer digital yet sustainable innovative solutions for real time challenges. A total of 7531 idea solutions were received from the participants in response to 598 problem statements put forward by 29 different Government ministeries and departments.

Creatif Pixel, the team from Thapar University, participated in the ‘Startup India Mobile App’ challenge proposed by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Ministry of Post. The team proposed its solution in the form of a mobile app named ‘Startup India v2.0’, which according to them could integrate numerous domains of the start-up ecosystem and provide a simple, one-stop solution for sending important and relevant information to Startup India, all through a single platform. Led by Tanay Khanna and comprising Satvik Gupta, Pragya Dhir, Anubhav Gupta, Anshika Singh and Taniya Saini, all students of Thapar University’s Science and Engineering Department, Creatif Pixel was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 for securing the second runner-up position through this innovative solution. The team was mentored by Dr. MD Singh, Ms. Anika, Dr. Karminder, Mr. Karun Verma and Dr. Maninder Singh.

“You have made us proud,” said Dr. Prakash Gopalan, Director of Thapar University, commending the team for their success in the prestigious national-level event. Dr. Gopalan also reiterated the University’s commitment towards supporting such ventures by creating a conducive ecosystem to accelerate the growth of a techno-entrepreneurial spirit among all its students.
