DU teachers protest against FYUP at HRD ministry - Delhi University teachers and students staged a demonstration outside the Ministry of Human Resource Development(HRD ministry) on May 30, demanding the rollback of four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).
In a conversation with Carees360 Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) president Nandita Narain informed about the positive response from the HRD minister Smriti Irani into the matter. “She (HRD minister) has assured us that everything will be done within the constitutional framework and has asked the education secretary to take immediate action into the matter. A meeting may take place in a week, after the minister go through the detailed framework provided by us, says Narain”“Everything you wanted to know about DU admissions is here. Many teachers and students groups are against the newly-introduced FYUP in DU. Their concern is that the uniform courses are not appropriate to address different needs of students studying different courses in the University.
According to Narain, “Students are not getting value addition by one-year added course that is substandard. They need to allot their time in foundation courses which are not required after the completion of schooling. Main subjects are ignored in new structure.”
Apart from DUTA, Democratic Teachers’ Front, other groups which took part in the protest were All India Students' Association, Krantikari Yuva Sangathan, students from JNU and Jamia Millia. The demonstration was organized by All India Democratic Students’ Organization under the Save DU campaign.
“We found out in our survey that 80 percent to 90 percent students are not happy with this four-year structure,” Narain said.
Delhi University introduced four-year degree programme for its undergraduate courses in 2013, replacing the earlier three-year programme. The University now offers the following degrees for its undergraduate programmes – Bachelor with Honours (4 Academic Years), Bachelor (3 Academic Years) and Diploma (2 Academic Years).
As per the guidelines of the FYUP, if you wish or have to leave college after two years, DU shall acknowledge your education and award you a Diploma. Similarly, if you wish or have to leave after three years, DU shall give you a Bachelor’s degree with a Major Subject.
You can return to DU in the future to complete your education. However, if you successfully complete your course in DU after 4 years, you will be awarded a Bachelor with Honours Degree.
Amid these controversies and criticism, 2014 admission process in the renowned University is beginning from June 2. The central university will be inviting a common OMR application form for admissions to 54,000 seats in 65 colleges. The last date for applications is June 16.
