Delhi University Vice Chancellor resigns over escalating FYUP controversy
Abhay Anand, 24 Jun 2014, #DU

The Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi, Prof. Dinesh Singh has resigned from his post amidst ongoing confusion over the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).

Prof. Singh was at the helm of affairs in the launch of FYUP in DU. He had been adamant on not scrapping the programme despite University Grants Commission’s (UGC) order.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of India has refused to hear a petition filed by a Delhi University professor, Aditya Narayan Mishra, who wanted the four-year course to continue.

The apex court has asked the professor to approach the Delhi High Court instead.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) also decided not to intervene in the stand-off between the UGC and the University over scrapping of the controversial Four-Year Undergraduate Programme

The Ministry decided to leave it on the UGC and DU after a meeting of HRD Minister Smriti Irani with UGC authorities.

The Ministry said that the UGC was the supreme body to decide on the matter. It said universities must follow UGC orders. The UGC had given the university an ultimatum to withdraw the programme or face consequences.

The University affiliated colleges were to come up with their first cut-off list today and admissions were also to begin for various undergraduate courses.
