As many as 16 Indian Universities have secured place in the list of top 200 Universities of Times Higher Education (THE) BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2016. The list of Indian Institutes among top 200 is led by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru which improved its ranking significantly from 25th to 16th rank. A total of 16 Indian Insituttuins have found place in top 200 listing as compared to 11 institute last year.
IISc Bangalore (16) is followed by 7 IITs – IIT Bombay (29), IIT Madras (36), IIT Delhi (37), IIT Roorkee (48), IIT Kharagpur (45), IIT Guwahati (83) and IIT Kanpur (95).
Other Indian institutions in the list of THE BRICS Rankings 2016 include Jadavpur University, Panjab University, Aligarh Muslim University, Andhra University, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi and Savitribai Phule Pune University. In addition to these public Universities, privately owned University – Amrita University is ranked at 181.
Majority of the ranked universities have improved their positions from the last year’s rankings. While IISc Bengaluru was ranked at 25 last year, this year it has been ranked at 16 among the other BRICS Universities. Likewise, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Guwahati have improved their rankings by 8, 8, 9 and 15 notches, respectively. Moreover, the new additions to the list are Jadavpur University, ranked at 80, Savitribai Phule Pune University, ranked at 129, University of Calcutta at 137 and University of Delhi (154) apart from Amrita University (181) and Andhra University (193).
Surprisingly, one of the most sought after University of India – Jawaharlal Nehru University, which was ranked at 71 in the last year, is missing from the Rankings this year.

Peking University of China has topped the list of THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2016 followed by Tsinghua University (China), Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russian Federation), University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Natioal Taiwan University (Taiwan) ranked at 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively.
As many as 5 universities from China have been placed in the top 10 BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2016. A total of 35 countries have been represented in THE BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings 2016.
