UPES students win University Challenge of IIGP 2.0

Two teams from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun have won the University Challenge of India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP) 2.0 held on August 9, 2017. As per the University, each team will receive a funding of Rs. 10 lakh each to build prototypes of a submersible Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and space debris management system.

A six member team comprising Rajat Singhal, N Adithyan, SM Hamza Hasan and Vaibhav Bhatia from B. Tech in Avionics Engineering, Cris Thomas from M. Tech in Aerospace Engineering and Vertika Saxena from B. Des in Product Design will now be working to develop a prototype of a low-cost submersible UAV. Using highly advanced technologies including artificial intelligence and image processing techniques, the prototype is designed to be launched from an underwater platform, fly in the air to perform certain missions and return to the platform. Given its submersible capabilities, this UAV prototype is also intended to withstand corrosive underwater environment.


The other winner of the IIGP 2.0 University Challenge, Siddharth Ojha, a B.Tech in Avionics Engineering student, will be developing a prototype of a symmetrical hyperloop for the management of space debris in low earth orbit.


The UPES students emerged as winners under the leadership of Dr. Kamal Bansal, College of Engineering Studies, UPES, and through the mentorship of faculty members including Dr. Vindhya Devalla, Sudhir Joshi, Dr. Amit Kumar Mondal, Vivek Kaundal, Dr. Kanak Pal Singh Parmar, Dr. Rajesh Yadav and V. K Patidar.

IIGP 2.0 is a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the TATA Trusts, the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSTF), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the MIT Energy institute, IIT Bombay and IIM Ahmedabad and aims to accelerate the integration of innovative Indian technologies into global markets using world class commercialization strategies and business development assistance.

The college has a great placement cell. MNCs like amazon provides internships at the end of every year.

The highest package offered was 31 lakhs by weatherford drilling international to a M.tech.

The average packages offered are mentioned below fieldwise:

  • Petroleum-4.5 lakh
