Use of quantifiable parameters in a nutshell is the primary basis for Careers360 ranking of Indian Universities 2014. While this approach vis-Ã -vis ‘perception based mode’ can be argued out for better results; world over the evaluation criteria is shifting towards such outcomes which are transparent, easy to comprehend and subject to public scrutiny.
Assembling the data – We began updating our database of Universities from September 2013 and filed over 1500 RTI applications to 214 selected Universities. The next few months were spent on collating the data. An independent research team focused on gathering the data based on publications, citations and also the patents.
Short listing of Universities –
A comprehensive exercise was undertaken to list out all the universities and autonomous institutes that award degrees in India. To be precise, we categorized all the 742 universities by their type – be it Central, State, Private-State, Deemed to be Universities and Institutes of National Importance. We also invited entries for participating in the ranking process and made use of data available publicly or through Right to Information Act.
How we rated the Universities – World over Universities has been rated based on Teaching, Research Output and Industry Income. Barring research Output and Citations, it’s almost impossible to get information on other parameters of the Indian Universities. So we used the publication record from Web of Science, Patents (both granted and applied), NAAC rating score and student-faculty ratio as a proxy for teaching effectiveness.
Detailed Methodology – Assessing a University’s performance is an intricate task wherein the emphasis is increasingly on research and its output. Not ignoring the learning experience which is best measured using factors such as student-faculty ratio and accreditation (NAAC) or an equivalent thereof by a reputed independent agency; Careers360 focused on both and also looked at the research scholars.
