Careers360 has rated top medical universities in India 2013. The total number of medical universities which were taken for the university rating process 2013 was 16. The 16 top medical universities of India are rated between 5 stars and 2 stars based on the four factors of Accreditation, Publications (refereed journals), Deemed University Score (if applicable) and Indian Patents. Three best medical universities of India have received 5 stars. 7 medical universities have been given 4 stars. For the 3 star rating, only 3 medical universities qualified, followed by 3 medical universities receiving 2 stars. That India critically needs well trained and educated medical professionals is a truism. However, it is news to us that the top medical universities which produce them could also be cradles of great academic productivity. But the unfortunate fact is that most of these medical universities are not integrated with the larger educational system. World over medical and biotechnology schools lead the research pool. The intersection of engineering and medicine is another fertile area for research. But the country is yet to take steps in that direction. Medical universities of National Importance and deemed universities are better performers. AIIMS New Delhi is the best in terms of publications, patent applications and patents granted followed by Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. Though there are seven National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali is the best in terms of patent applications and granted as also in publication count. NIMHANS Bangalore and JIPMER Puducherry are the other two promising medical universities. Among the private medical universities, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai is good in publication count followed by KLE University (KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research), Belgaum. However, many private medical universities in the country are not interested in patenting, it seems. Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram outperforms others in terms of patents, both granted and applied.
