Agriculture contributes less than 20 percent to nation’s GDP. However, the sector is the life line for a majority of the population and hence crucial.
With the setting up of UP Agricultural University (now GB Pant University of Agriculture & Technology) in 1960 at Tarai State Farm, Nainital, the first Agriculture University came up in the country on the pattern of ‘land grant’ institutes of the United States. The idea was to reorganize and strengthen the system of agricultural and allied education in India.

Despite the growth, very few universities match the global standards, particularly in research. Most universities need to divert their efforts on high quality research interface with biotech and nanotech, and engage with manifold stakeholders and super speciality research organizations, corporate houses etc. IARI, IVRI and PAU Ludhiana are good in publication output, while TNAU, IARI and FRI excel in patenting activity. Most of them score well in learning.
