Prof. Katkar VC: "India must focus on music education"

Q. Why a student must study at BMIDU?

A. Earlier music training was being given on individual basis by trained gurus to their disciple. The learning was as per the terms and conditions of the guru. This restricted training was catered to only few people as opposed to masses.  After the establishment of BMIDU all interested lot flocked in to pursue classical music, instrumental music and dance. The students are trained in their particular field of music and also given stage exposure from time to time which enhances their performing skills.

Q.Many artistes compromise on their art, as they feel it is not a feasible career option. What is your opinion about music career.
A. Lack of proper and organized mode of employment is a great hindrance in motivating students to take music as a good career option. Nevertheless, it’s a challenge to become a trained classical music stage artist today. Students can also pursue their bachelors and masters degree in music, qualify NET (national eligibility test) and secure a university job in India. There is lot of demand of music teachers in schools and colleges.

Q. Why Music and dance is not promoted well by many universities and college?
A. It is because government bodies consider art education, especially music and dance secondary. Hence proper funds are not invested for the scientific research of music. Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University has a rich faculty. There are many PhD holders who are consistently making efforts in terms of paper and poster presentations on national and international level.

Q. How can we make Music education proactive in our country?
A. Music should be introduced in the schools right from the kindergarten level. At schools and colleges, music education should be made theoretical and practical. Students when they grow up know very well the advantages and beauty of classical music. Much damage has already been done by not training students properly till now.

Q. Do you think Indian music could gain world attention in future?
A.
India has a rich heritage of Classical Music and dance which she can exploit and open up its knowledge of classical music and dance to the world. Just like giving attention to technical institutes, India should cater to music education and should be funded properly. If supported well by the government, Bhatkhande could be a best model for promoting Indian music across the world. Seekers of music education from all parts of the world should be given best facilities to come to India and pursue music education.
