Technical man power requirement is in rise year by year. Advent of technology and also usage of technology for well being of mankind has catalyzed this requirement to greater extent. India as a country of youth has emphasized the need to impart quality technical education. Over twenty lakh students getting admitted every year in 3500 plus colleges speak the magnitude of technical education in India. The greater responsibility of the institutions is to produce engineers who are employable and technically skilled with global attributes being imbibed. Hence, following are the areas in technical education which need urgent attention and proper addressing by MHRD and also statutory bodies like AICTE / UGC.

  • Contemporary curriculum which should be bench marked to international standards. Curriculum should make students long term employable and also innovative in the process of implementation. This should also open-up scope for R&D activities and enable students to drive for higher studies. Following global standards also overtakes the barriers of globalization.
  • Qualified and well trained faculty is the need of the hour. Mushrooming of Engineering colleges has compromised on the quality of teaching staff with considerable dearth in PGs and Ph.D qualified staff. Rigorous and well focused research activities leading to Ph.D and starting specialized PG programs are the urgent requirements to address this problem.
  • Bridging the gap between industries and institute is the major matter of concern in India. Participation of industries in designing the curriculum, providing internship to students to make them aware of industry culture and expectations and challenging placements are the expectations from industries. Hence, interaction with industries in capacity building is must and needs attention.

Since, India has already become part of Washington accord and decided to adopt outcome based education system, these issues need immediate attention.
