When it comes to offering the number of colleges for the age group of 18-23 within a state for every lakh eligible population, Karnataka has grabbed the acme spot. Karnataka has the highest college density despite the fact that Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are ahead of it in terms of total number of colleges. With the offering of 51 colleges per lakh eligible population, the state accommodates a total of 3593 colleges in total, according to Ministry of Human Resource Development’s All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2017-18.

The next rank has been secured by Maharashtra and Rajasthan with equal (33) number of college density, however, the total number colleges in both the states vary. While Maharashtra recorded 4314 colleges, the total number of colleges in Rajasthan is 2957.
Next to these states are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh with 30, 28 and 24 colleges per lakh college population, respectively. These states accommodate 2196, 6922 and 2124 colleges respectively.
Contrary to the college density where the state of UP doesn’t lead the lot, however, the state runs the maximum number of colleges. According to the official data released by AISHE 2017-18, Uttar Pradesh houses 6922 colleges, which is maximum in any Indian state. This number of colleges is almost double the number of colleges in Karnataka. However the state offers only 28 colleges per lakh eligible population.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh secured second, third, fourth and fifth positions with 4314, 3593, 2957 and 2624 colleges in total. Next to Andhra is Tamil Nadu with 2472 colleges, followed by Gujarat at seventh place having a college strength of 2196.
The last state out of the top 8 in terms of offering the maximum number of colleges, as per AISHE report 2017-18, is Madhya Pradesh. The state has 2124 colleges, but has a college density of 24 per lakh eligibile candidates. Know the states with maximum colleges from the table below.
