Jyotsna Krishna from Bangalore who founded ‘Joy Greens Landscaping and Consultancy Services’ credits her entrepreneurial success to the international exposure she got when she did her ‘B.Tech in Environmental Landscape Horticulture’ from Dalhousie University, Canada under dual degree collaboration with Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU). She had joined BSc (Horticulture) at TNAU in 2008 and after her third year, joined Dalhousie University and completed her B.Tech in 2012. “Everyone who asks me whether dual degree programmes was worth it, I say yes, to me it was. My intention was to learn something new, make new friends, earn money, struggle and understand the intricacies of life, this would be an eye opener for Indians,” she said. In collaboration with Dalhousie University, TNAU runs at least four undergraduate programmes. “The primary advantage of a dual degree is that the students get one degree from TNAU and another degree from Dalhousie University, Canada in four years,” says Dr K. Ramasamy, Vice Chancellor, TNAU
Dual degree programmes
Under dual degree programmes one can pursue two university degrees simultaneously in different countries, studying the first two years, if it is a B.Tech, in host country and the other two abroad. The plus point is that you complete two degrees in the time span for one, gives you international exposure and cuts costs when compared to completing a single course abroad.
Under twinning programmes students can complete part of their studies in India and the rest in a foreign college. Foreign educators prefer adopting twinning mode to operate in India because they have least stakes and maximum income. Indian students, on the other hand prefer twinning because the total cost is less in exchange for a foreign degree and international exposure. Twining programme offers a cost-effective opportunity for exploring international academic atmospheres through collaborations with universities abroad. The programme aims to expose students to world-class facilities and academic practices as they spend significant term of the course overseas.
Admission and selection
Generally these programmes are open to all aspirants in Indian universities. Private universities give admission through their own entrance exams. For undergraduate courses, candidates must have minimum 60 percent marks in their 10+2 and if you are going for an engineering course, then one must have 60 percent marks in PCM subjects. Apart from private engineering entrance exams, universities also taking admission on the basis of JEE (Mains) score.

UNIVERSITIES THAT OFFER TWINNING PROGRAMMES
The ‘Academy for International Programme (AIP)’ at SRM University enable students to take up ‘Twinning (Transfer) Degree overseas and Dual Degree overseas’ programmes.’ The students, under a programme structured as ‘2+ 2 program’ are expected to complete first 2 years of B.Tech at SRM and the rest at the foreign university. The credits of the 4th year are transferred to SRM which awards the degree. At least 80 to 100 students have obtained foreign degree so far under the programme. “Our programme’s curriculum is as per the requirements of the partner university. Manipal University, Manipal runs undergraduate twinning degree programmes in collaboration with universities in the USA, UK or Australia. “We offer unique undergraduate engineering programmes wherein the first two years are held in Manipal, and the next two in one of the partner universities. The international partner university provides the engineering degree on completion of the course,” says Dr Ramjee B, Director, International Collaborations, Manipal University.

The students are required to study alternate years at the Greater Noida and Carnegie Mellon University’s Pittsburg campus through the 4-year programme. This programme has been designed with a common curriculum where the students pursuing the programme will be awarded two degrees. The students will be awarded a Bachelor in Technology from SNU and a Bachelor in Science in Engineering from CMU. Students also have opportunities to undertake summer internships in both the US and India.
