HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) - The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Speaking test is used primarily to assess the candidate’s skills in oral communication in the Chinese language. These HSK Speaking Test is commonly referred to as the HSKK test and has three different levels of proficiency. This Chinese test is to be taken along with the progressing Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) levels. This is because, the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) tests the candidate’s skill in the areas of listening, reading and writing. Therefore, in order ensure complete and comprehensive assessment of Chinese language proficiency, candidates are required to give the HSK Speaking Test as well. Most academic institutions and employers require both certificates for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and the HSKK. 


HSKK Registration

The registration process for the HSKK is to be carried out online and can be done at any time of the year. There are no specific deadlines for HSKK account creation although there are often deadlines for specific test dates at associated test centers. The Chinese test registration process for HSKK includes the following steps:

  • Candidates must create a Chinese test account in order to register for an HSKK test. This requires a username (candidate’s email address), password and basic personal details. Upon creation of the Chinese test login ID, candidates can start the HSKK registration process. 

  • The candidate must then select the preferred Chinese test for registration. Upon clicking ‘register now’ for the preferred HSKK level, the candidate will be able to select the test center as well as test dates from the available set of dates for the specific center. 

  • Subsequently, the candidate must provide various details regarding personal and academic information in order to complete the Chinese test login ID. 

  • The candidate must upload a 2-inch recent photograph to the Chinese test login ID. This photograph will be printed on the Chinese test admit card and used for identification purposes at the test center therefore it must be of good quality and must match the candidate as well as the photograph on the candidate’s government-issued ID.

  • Finally, the candidate must make the payment for the test after which he or she will receive a confirmation email at the registered email address in around 10 days.

  • The candidate can print their admission ticket using the Chinese test login ID or collect it from the specific test center of registration. The candidate must carry the admit card along with a government-issued photo ID as well as requisite stationery items on the day of the test. Candidates will not be permitted inside the Chinese test center without the HSKK admit card.

HSKK Chinese Test Centers

HSK Speaking Test or HSKK test centers are available around the world at different Chinese language institutions or affiliates. There are 9 Chinese test centers in India which offer the HSKK test. Candidates can apply for their preferred test center after HSK test registration. The HSKK is offered both in the online or internet-based format as well as the paper-based format. There is only one center in India which offers the HSK Speaking Test in the internet-based format.

HSKK Test Dates

The Chinese test dates for HSKK usually fall on the dates for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). These dates are released by the Chinese test website on a rolling basis around 8-10 times a year. The dates for the HSK Speaking Test also tend to differ with the specific test center, therefore candidates must select their Chinese test date from the dates available for their preferred test center. All the levels of HSK Speaking Test are available for the mentioned test dates. The currently available Chinese test dates are for the months January-March, 2019 and registration for these test sessions is open.

HSKK Test Fees

The fees for the HSK Speaking Test are object subject to regular variation due to the constant changes in conversion rates. The fees for this Chinese test may differ with the selected test center and therefore, candidates can contact their specific test center in order to know further details regarding the HSKK fee structure.


Chinese Proficiency Test - HSK Speaking Test Levels

There are three different Chinese test levels for the HSK speaking test or HSKK. These three levels are beginner, intermediate and advanced and correspond to the A2, B2 and C2 levels of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). This Chinese test is conducted in the form of audio recordings as it is an assessment of proficiency in spoken Chinese. The various language requirements as well as HSK Speaking Test sections and duration for each of the HSKK levels have been listed below. 

  1. HSKK Primary Level

The HSKK Primary Level test is the lowermost level of the HSK Speaking Tests and is an attestation to the candidate’s proficiency in basic spoken Chinese. This Chinese test is considered equivalent to the A level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or CEFR. Candidates with an HSKK Primary Level certification are able to carry out basic conversations regarding specific needs in the Chinese language.

Language required: 200 commonly known words and associated grammar.

Total test duration: 17 minutes; inclusive of 7 minutes for preparation.

  1. HSKK Intermediate Level

The HSKK Intermediate Level test is the intermediate level of the HSK Speaking Tests and this Chinese is considered equivalent to the B level of the CEFR scale. Candidates who have an HSKK Intermediate Level certification can understand intermediate Chinese and converse with satisfactory fluency with native speakers of Chinese.

Language required: 900 commonly known words and associated grammar.

Total test duration: 21 minutes; inclusive of 10 minutes for preparation.

  1. HSKK Advanced Level

The HSKK Advanced Level test is the uppermost level of the HSK Speaking Tests and attests to a candidate’s near-native ability in oral communication in Chinese. This Chinese test is considered equivalent to the C level of the CEFR scale. Candidates who have an HSKK Advanced Level certification can effectively understand spoken Chinese and fluently express their ideas in Chinese. 

Language required: 3,000 commonly known words and associated grammar.

Total test duration: 24 minutes; inclusive of 10 minutes for preparation.

HSKK Test Result

The Chinese test result for HSKK will be provided to the candidates around 4 to 6 weeks from the date of the test. The result will be an HSK Speaking Test certificate which features the candidate’s pass status as well score on the HSKK. Candidates need to obtain a score above the passing criteria in order obtain an HSKK Chinese proficiency certification. The passing score for all three of the test levels is the same and is equivalent to 60.

HSKK Certificate Validity

The HSK Speaking Test certificate is essentially valid for an indefinite period of time and has no expiration date. However, in most situations, such as when applying for Chinese universities or for a job at a Chinese company or firm, the assessors and recruiters often prefer a recent HSK Speaking Test certification while considering language proficiency of the candidate. This means that candidates are usually required to have a certificate which have been obtained within the preceding 2 years in order to ensure that the Chinese language proficiency remains valid.
