What differentiates Lady Doak College, Madurai from its contemporaries is the extensive use of technology. The college posts its study material online through Google Classroom. All the study material is available online and is at students exposure any time of the year. For catching up with the changing means of learning, the teachers are trained at regular intervals and workshops for tech-upgradation and learning are held frequently. Read what Dr Evangeline Esther David, English Faculty at the college shared with Meha Mathur.
Careers360: What is the USP of your college?Dr Evangeline Esther David: What sets our college apart is our extensive use of technology, unlike most other colleges in this region. For example, we post our study material online through Google Classroom, which is uploaded throughout the semester. In case a student is absent she can refer to that material. Notes, Videos and presentations, everything is uploaded and assignments also have to be submitted online. There is uninterrupted wi-fi access. Of course, students are happily Whatsapping but we have to monitor that.
College Comparison based on Courses, Placement, Rank, Fee
Careers360: Has the role of teachers shifted, with increasing role of technology?Dr Evangeline Esther David: Of course, technology alone cannot fulfil the needs. For example, in English, you need to tell stories, explain characters. Both are equally important.
Careers360: How do you keep a check on students getting into the habit of lifting material to complete assignments?Dr Evangeline Esther David: Every assignment has to go through Urkund (software) for plagiarism check. If there is plagiarism above 20 percent, we reject the assignment. Also, we select assignment topics in such a way that they can’t copy. They have to be creative. And even if they are copying, they have to give proper citations.
Careers360: Does the college train teachers for use of technology and how comfortable are older teachers?Dr Evangeline Esther David: We get training frequently. There are several workshops for that. We can’t say ‘I don’t know computers’. Even I was not accustomed when I joined, but now I am adept at it.
Careers360: What are the challenges before the college?Dr Evangeline Esther David: One challenge is that the college is quite small. Since we have more than 4,000 students we have to have two shifts. Also, students don’t have sensitivity towards keeping the environs clean, despite classes on Environment Studies.
