VALUE PROPOSITION You can grow your skills while working or studying full-time

A professional educational advisor by profession and a graduate from Delhi’s LSR College, Aparna Bhalla Shukla, 30, has eight years of work experience behind her. Aparna now feels the need to upgrade her technical and theoretical knowledge and grow in her field. But she cannot chuck her job and opt for a full-time programme.

However, thanks to Delhi University’s Department of Adult, Continuing Education, Aparna has an alternative option. She has applied for their new short-term course in Counselling & Guidance and shares, “This is a part-time course and the biggest advantage is that I can continue my job while pursuing it. I just need to attend two days’ class in a week. I hope this will help me in my career ahead.”

Pallavi Sharma is another beneficiary of the course. After completing an MA in Sociology from JNU, she is looking for a job. However, not wanting to sit idle between interviews and sending résumés, she has applied for the three-month course on Human Rights. “I am not interested in doing an MPhil and this course will help me in specialising in Education and Human Rights, which falls under social sciences.”

Courses on offer
Delhi University’s Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (Faculty of Social Sciences) offers six short-term courses i.e. Counselling and Guidance, Science & Sports Journalism, Travel & Tourism, Physical Fitness & Sports Medicine, Volunteer Management and Human Rights, which is sponsored by UGC. Duration of each course is about three months, and students will have to attend classes twice a week only and go on frequent field visits. These short-term courses come easy on your pocket. For instance, the total fee for the course on Human Rights is Rs. 1,000 and for others it is Rs. 2200. Considering the expense incurred by the University on faculty and infrastructure provided, the fees is negligible.

How to apply
Interested students can apply for the courses in the Department’s office from 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays. The application form fee is Rs. 20. As per the information given by Dr. Rajesh, Head, Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (Faculty of Social Sciences), the last date for submitting application forms has been extended from 30 June, 2012 to July 10, 2012. The minimum qualification is 10+2. The application form will have to be submitted along with the all relevant certificates and a passport size photograph.

Selection procedure
As per the information given by the department, each course has 35 seats. Selection is on the basis of the academic performance in the last educational level and a personal interview. 80% marks will be given to the former and 20% to the interview.

“These short-term courses come easy on your pocket, are conducted for two to three days a week and some have internships”

Objective of the courses
“They cater to the various needs of today’s competitive world. During the course, the students interact with experts from the respective fields and this helps in enhancing their professional capabilities and make them competent. Team work is also emphasised during the course,” says Dr. Rajesh. According to him, programmes have be launched based on the needs of the industry. Some courses, like Counselling and Guidance course, is followed by a 15-day internship at prestigious institutions. You can explore the offering by other DU departments as per your academic interest and field of work.
