Curricular and co-curricular development go hand in hand - Dr Rabi Narayan Kar

In an interview with Dr Rabi Narayan Kar, Principal, Shyamlal College, University of Delhi, Meha Mathur explores several areas of the institute including culture, sports, its USP, infrastructure, technological development, and the challenges ahead.

Careers360: What are the strengths and USPs of your college, which have enabled it to become one of the top 100 colleges of the country?

Dr Rabi Narayan Kar:

  • SLC strives for meaningful transformation of learners to responsible citizens by providing them with an all-inclusive and value based education. SLC provides a constantly caring, supportive and secure teaching and learning environment for engagement with the students and other stakeholders to achieve excellence in academics, sports, extra-curricular activities and develop an analytical temper with a focus on instilling strong values to prepare them as leaders.

  • The College continually engages with the nearby community and neighborhood by providing free coaching (Sports) to nearby school children, cleanliness drives in grounds, Shahdara mandi and other markets.

  • It adopts environment friendly practices and formulates strategies for strengthening research and innovation in the college that expand the realm of knowledge for students.

  • College also adopts various best practices and Green Initiatives such as: Solar Power Plant, Rain Water Harvesting, Paper Recycling and compost generation.

Dr Rabi Narayan Kar:
All the courses are popular. The college has introduced several skill development courses namely language courses in German, French, Spanish and a certificate course in BSE: Stock Exchange which is immensely popular among students.

Careers360: How has the college kept pace with the new pedagogical and technological advances, and with infrastructure requirements?

Dr Rabi Narayan Kar:

  • College has adopted various advanced pedagogic methods like case studies and role play, International Exchange Programs, use of cinema and theatre and field trips for enhancing practical knowledge base of students.

  • College also promotes academic leadership, co-curricular activities, skill development with emphasis on Soft Skills, winter and summer schools, active mentoring of students.

  • To combine curricular and co-curricular academic development of the students, college has various centers like CIISD, CHD, WDC, Eco Club, GSC, ASC.

  • The primary focus of the infrastructure policy of the college is to arrange and manage basic infrastructure necessities for the smooth conduct of classes, cultural activities and academic extension activities.

Careers360: What cultural and sports life can students expect in your college?

Dr Rabi Narayan Kar:

  • Cultural and sports life in SLC aims to provide the holistic education environment to our students. College has many societies for our young talents like Aarodhya for Dance, Qaisda for Poetry, Film making, Photography, Aakrosh for Street Play etc. Our Students have won various National level, State level and University level Competitions in the Cultural activities.

  • SLC also offers a wide range of sports activities and for this a huge sports ground is available for games like Cricket, Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Baseball and various common facilities.

  • Sports facilities are regularly maintained and upgraded under the headship of Sports In-charge. Sporting events are encouraged to be attended by the students.

  • The College has been holding Shyam Lal Memorial Hockey Tournament for a decade now where the teams of different college participate.

  • Our Students, in games like Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Basketball have won International, National, State level Championships.
