Careers360, the largest and India’s most popular career counsellor and research driven education publication has announced University Rating/Ranking Survey 2015.

World over, universities have been ranked based on their research output and perception of academic peers. So far, India has not seen a ranking matching the scale and style of THE or QS ranking exercise. For the last three years, Careers360 has been critically looking at the performance of Indian Universities. Into its fourth edition, the rating has been gaining critical acclaim from the community. In addition to research output, our rating also looks at innovation in course delivery, diversity of offerings, and entrepreneurial research activities as well. The idea is to present an all-around assessment of universities.

In a nutshell, use of quantifiable parameters is the primary basis for Careers360’s ranking of Indian Universities. A comprehensive exercise was undertaken to list out all the universities and autonomous institutes that award degrees in India. To be precise, we categorized all the 742 universities by their type; be it central, state, private-state, ‘deemed to be universities’ and institutes of national importance. We also invited entries to participate in the ranking process and made use of data available publicly or through Right to Information Act.

Our methodology is based on a preliminary search for publications and citations in international databases such as Thomson Reuter’s Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus; intellectual property rights (IPR) search at the Indian Patent Office database. Accreditations score is sourced from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Critical information like number of faculty, students enrolled and research scholars in universities, numbers of incubation units have been obtained from respective universities as well as the Self Study reports uploaded on their websites. The assessment would be broadly based on the following parameters and weightage.

Student-Faculty Ratio/ Full-time PhD scholars/PhD out-turn/ Aggregate Faculty/Department Diversity

No. of Departments, Research Centers

Residential (Faculty & Students)

NAAC/International Accreditation of universities/ institutes and its score/CBCS/Grading

Diversity of Course Offerings

No. of programmes/ Innovative programme offerings/ Joint Degrees/ Integrated Programmes

Academic Output

Publication Count in refereed journals as indexed in Web of Science (normalized for the number of faculty/departments)

Intellectual Property (IP)

IP Filed (2011-2014) and Patent Stock at IPO with more weightage to the latter

Productivity & Impact

Citation (normalized average citation per paper and  also for domain variations)

Industry & Social Interface

Sponsored Research & Entrepreneurial Infrastructure & Social Initiatives
