Business Chinese Test (BCT) - Apart from the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) exam, the most prominently recognized Chinese test is the Business Chinese Test or BCT. The BCT is a standardized and internationally-recognized test for Chinese language in the business context and environment. The test focuses on non-native Chinese speakers’ language ability in common workplace environments. The BCT is divided into the written and oral test, the former of which is further divided into levels A and B. The written tests are BCT(A) and BCT(B) and focus on Chinese language skills associated with listening, reading and writing. The BCT(Oral iBT) is an internet-based and computer-adaptive test which tests the candidate on the basis of speaking skills in Chinese. 


Business Chinese Test (BCT) Registration

In order to register for the BCT, candidates need to follow the given procedure:

  • Candidates are required to create a Chinese Test account before they can register for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) or the Business Chinese Test (BCT). In order to create an account, candidates require an email address, password and basic personal details.

  • Upon account creation, candidates can select the BCT from the various test options. Candidates must then select their preferred test center and test date for the Chinese test. 

  • Further academic, personal and language-related details are required along with a 2-inch recent photograph in order to complete the registration process. 

  • The final step for BCT registration is the payment of the exam fee. The candidates will receive an email confirmation of registration within 10 days of completing the payment. 

  • The candidates can use the Chinese test login ID to print out the BCT admit card or they can pick up the admit card from the selected test center. 

  • It is necessary for candidates to carry the BCT admit card, a government-issued photo ID as well as the requisite stationery items on the day of the test. Candidates who do not have the admit card will not be allowed in the exam hall. 


Business Chinese Test (BCT) Centers

There are four different test centers for the BCT in India. These centers also offer the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and HSK Speaking Test. Out of these test centers, three offer the written Business Chinese Tests i.e. BCT (A) and BCT (B). One test center offers the oral and internet-based Business Chinese Test i.e. BCT (Oral iBT).

The dates for the BCT have been declared for 2019. These dates are prevalent across Chinese test centers all over the world. The individual Chinese test centers offer specific available dates and tests which are released 8-10 times throughout the year.

Business Chinese Test Fees

The fees for BCT are subject to change due to the constant fluctuation in the conversion rates over time. Therefore, the fees for this Chinese test are also dependent upon the specific test center which has been selected by the candidate. For specific fee details regarding BCT, candidates can contact their preferred test center. 


Business Chinese Test (BCT) Structure

The test structure varies for the written and oral Business Chinese Tests tremendously. The written Business Chinese Tests comprise 3 test sections each which are namely listening, reading and writing. These sections further contain sub-sections divided upon the different types of questions. The oral internet-based test however, focuses upon the speaking aspect of Chinese language proficiency and comprises 5 sections. The test structures for the three different tests which fall under BCT has been given below.

Business Chinese Test (BCT) Syllabus

The syllabus for the the different tests which fall under BCT comprises various topics and aspects of the Chinese language which are useful and imperative to survival in the Chinese business/professional environment. The syllabus has been published officially by Chinese Tests and is divided according to the sections constituting each individual test. 

  • Business Chinese Test (BCT) (A) Syllabus

The syllabus for BCT(A) is divided into three sections, namely listening, reading and writing. Being the lower level of the written Business Chinese Tests, it is equivalent to the lower three levels of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) corresponding to the business context.

Candidates can take informative notes for the explanation of a specific topic and write relevant instructions/documents. Candidates can also portray circumstances and express views in an objective manner.  


  • Business Chinese Test (BCT) (Oral iBT) Syllabus

The syllabus for BCT(Oral iBT) comprises 5 sections and focuses on the spoken language abilities of the test-taker. The BCT(Oral iBT) is considered equivalent to the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Speaking test or HSKK corresponding the context of business and professional environments.

Business Chinese Test (BCT) Result

The result for BCT will be provided to candidates within 4-6 weeks following the date of the Chinese test. The scores will be available online through the candidate’s Chinese test account and the certificate for the BCT will consist the candidate’s pass status as well as score. Candidates must obtain a score higher than the passing score for the specific Chinese test in order to receive a language proficiency certificate in the same. The results for the written and oral Business Chinese Tests will be calculated according to the following scoring criteria:

Business Chinese Test (BCT) Validity

Like other Chinese test certificates, the BCT certificate does not have an expiration date. Therefore, the certificate is essentially valid indefinitely. Despite this, as Business Chinese Test scores/certificates are usually required for professional purposes, most employers further request that the individual should have a satisfactory working knowledge of the Chinese language at the time of the recruitment. Therefore, it is often preferred that the Business Chinese Test has been recently obtained, generally within a period of 2 years or less preceding the time of recruitment.
